But you can call first and find out.
If you carry the barrel key in and want another one just like it, I don't see why they would need to see your registration. If you have the key to start with then you could use that first key if you were up to no good. Now if you only provide a VIN and want a key then I could see them wanting proof of ownership.

You're guilty of common sense there. Not legal CYA. I ordered 2 from my dealer. They didn't require any proof, but they had sold me the bike. They were 2 for $25.

I had one made by a locksmith for my 07 FXD, works fine. Might be the blank he is using.

I wonder if I can currently get a barrel key like this copied for a 1999 Softail at a local HD dealership? I have only one key and would like at least one spare. This thread is pretty old. Seems like dealers were doing it a few years ago but I wonder what their cut off is for age now? Does anyone have any recent experiences with old keys at dealers?

I emailed the local locksmith with a good reputation and they said they could not duplicate that key.

Pull the black sleeve off it has the the key code number under it. Any dealer can order a new key with the key code number.

Does it look different. It pushes 7 pins to align. The step combinations are pretty obvious.

Illinois lock is i think who HD uses for keys. We use them for all the barrel keys we order at work.

I needed a key for a 2003 Dyna. One locksmith said they couldn't make it because of the small hole in the side of the key. The hole is only there for a detent ball to keep the key from falling out in the off position. Another locksmith made one with no problem without the hole.

I ordered a pair of keys through my Dealer and they didn't work. I'm guessing they went off of the VIN. When they didn't work they told me it was a different ignition switch and is not the one that came from the factory. Local locksmith charged $3 a piece and went outside and tried them on the bike after he cut them, no questions asked.

I scooted on down to HD Louisville today to get the duplicate key made. They do need current registration. They said they use the VIN and the number on the key. She said she would call when it arrives to the dealership, about 10 days. $32.06
