The dealer VIN lookup for getting new keys doesn't always work. The guy I bought my '97 electra glide from went that way to get a key and it wouldn't work in the ignition or locks. I was lucky the original sales paperwork followed the bike all these years because it had the key code number on it, they didn't want to order that for me since it didn't match what their system said it should be but I insisted. Worked fine when I got it...
This whole "key code" thing puzzles me, because eventually either HD will run out of "key codes", or they keep reusing them, randomly, but that means that ANYONE can simply try THEIR key in ANY bike, and they MIGHT be able to unlock and start it. That doesn't make sense to me, and would seem to be a HUGE risk!

Assuming zeros are allowed, there are 10,000 possible key codes. I believe the odds are in your favor.

I hadn't thought of that, but you're probably right. However, I would think there would be more possible combinations for those than for the bike. Those usually have at least 6 tumblers, maybe more, which can each have at least 3-4 different positions, while the bike codes are usually only 4 or 5 digits, at least that I've seen. If I'm wrong, please let me know.
