2006 FXDBI, less than 10 months old, 10,000 miles:
Right fork seal began leaking about two months ago - has had a negative effect on cornering; front end dives, etc. While I do travel gravel roads on a daily basis, I am very dissapointed that this would happen within 10 months of ownership. No leakage problems with my last HD.
While I dreaded doing so, I dropped it off at a new dealership Monday for the warranty repair. Went ahead and requested SE fork oil and will only have to pay the difference between the fluid price. Pretty impressed with the new shop so far - my former shop would have told me "it's a Harley, they do that".
I don't really like the look of gaiters, but if this happens again, I may not have an option. Really don't think they would look right on my bike.
I've got exactly the same problem (5,000 miles), which I reckon is due to a poor quality finish on the fork leg and/or weak seal. While dirt ingress is a plausible reason, I've never experienced anything similar over the many miles I've covered on either metric or British bikes owned previously.
dust is an unbelieveable enemy of machinery....any machinery...just ask anybody back from Iraq. Your seal is leaking now but that dust is working on the rest of your bike as well. You should probably consider getting a K&N oiled air filter element (maybe 2) so you can change out a clean one every 2-3 weeks. Then you might want to consider changing oil & filterevery 2000 miles as well because you don't want to be re-grinding the internals on your engine. Sounds like you are in a very "severe service" environment.
