I've ordered a new cam plate, new quick install pushrods, cams, bearing puller/installer. My question is, do I need anything else to do the install? I have a lift, and plenty of tools. I'm not interested in such things as: I should do the big bore kit, or the heads, etc. Hopefully, that will all come later. I'm just wondering if I'm going to need to run to the store a half dozen times for little items I'm overlooking for the install with what I stated above. Thank you very much for your help.
Maybe some of the magnetic tools to hold the lifters up if you aren't going to swap them for new ones. If you are, then you'll also need new lifters....
You might need a different thickness thrust washer for the rear cam.
I'm piggy backing on this and wanna ask a favor, can you give a list of what you've gotten so far? I want to do this too and might as well use this as my checklist
I used the stock cam plate but modified using an Axtell oil bypass valve. Good stuff.
Torrington cam bearings, careful pushing that puller in, don't force it, compress the ends to allow easy entry. You don't want to hammer it in you will crack the bearing race and lose a needle bearing inside the crank and then have to pull the engine apart. Really.
I lucked out but it could of been a nightmare but I found my needle bearing on the floor.
New pullers are very tight, compress the ends. the pin will straighten it out when it's inside.Hopefully I can help someone avoid that nightmare.
Loctite 262 red used on the cam shaft and crank bolts I would get new bolts in Harley kit comes with the new one time use bolts and hardened washers.
If you don't have decent torque wrench get one for those bolts.
I purchased a nice one with a dial 0 to 50 foot lbs, with the dial you see whats going on, no guess work.
I have a 96 so I went with the Andrews 48H cams and soo happy I did.
Permatex ultra assembly lube.
I used the better S+S High premium tappet without HL2T. Don't need it unless your racing (all the time). 120 seems fine.
I used Cometic gaskets both lifter covers and cam cover.
Harley Cam locking tool, I found one on Ebay new for half price. Worked fine.
I used Zippers dual cam chain tensioners, worth every penny.
I replaced all the cam cover screws,
I also have a nice high lift that helps,
And beer.
Blue locktite
bit o red locktite
New lifters?
Paperclips and elastic bands to hold the push rod covers
don't forget the various o rings (mentioned before)
I think I may have needed my inch/lb torque wrench
Assembly lube
The gear fastener (I forget what its called) that holds the gears while you tighten the bolts was worth the $15 for me. Made it easy!
There was an oil pump alignment tool called out for mine but it's an 06 with the newer cam parts. I used tapered head (countersunk) screws and worked like a champ.
I'm piggy backing on this and wanna ask a favor, can you give a list of what you've gotten so far? I want to do this too and might as well use this as my checklist
