so bummed out. had a bag attached to my motherwell rack and the rack was attached by a bolt they sell and the seat bolt at the other end. well after a little ride from work to my home, the seat bolt loosened itself and fell off so that end was floating around, and the other bolt was about 80 % out. basically I got a deep scratch and a part of the rear fender (about a dime size) of paint rub off. the bag probably weighs about 4 pounds so I am nbot sure why it would have worked itself out.
how do you guys secure your motherwell luggage racks? it seems to me mine usually works itself loose from the back end, but the seat bolt is almost always tightly locked in.
My Motherwell rack is rock solid. I use the thumb screw on one end and a hex head to connect it and my solo seat to the fender. Did you have the nylon washer on there? I have noticed on my seats before that if I don't have the nylon washer they will work themselves loose.
As far as being unobtrusive goes, I think the Motherwell is good as it gets. Most folks on here swear by 'em. Ibought the Harley Solo rack which is rock solid when on the bike .... not as sleek looking, but a very solid mounting for a bag.
The Harley rack has thefeel of a 50's/60's FLH rear rack. I've actually toyed with the idea of changing my bars and going to floorboards to capture that look.
Buy an o-ring with the same inside diameter as the outside diameter of the fender nut or cut the end off a piece of fuel lineand sandwich it between the rack and the fender, that will end the wiggle when youcinch it down tight. If you still have a problem with the bolt backing out use a plastic washer with a star washer or lock-washer above it. These racks will carry a lot of weight if you get them bolted down rock solid. Whatever you carry on the rack, make sure it can't rock back and forth, use a bungee cord or strap to the upper shock mount or tail-lite housing if necessary.
Thanks for all the suggestions. after I get my fender repainted I will reattach the rack with a little loctite and lock washers above/below. thanks again
