Default New Motor

I went to grab my bike and head out for a ride the other day. It had been sitting for a bit and not on a battery tender, so it was cranking for a bit without starting. Luckily, before it did start, I noticed it was pissing oil. Looked like about a half quart ended up on the ground.

I checked for obvious things like a loose drain plug or oil filter, but those are all tight. The leak seems to be at the very front of the motor, maybe on the bottom, or maybe where the oil filter bolts into the block, or maybe both.

Thinking the block may be cracked, but I can't really do much where I store the bike, so for now, I just threw some oil dry on the puddle and left it.

Thinking I might need a new motor. Really just too broke right now to do much about any of it no matter what it is. I guess I'm just kind of ranting/moaning here.

It's a 2002 Wide Glide TC88. Thinking if I do end up having to replace the motor, I should go with a 103 if possible, just because I think it would be about the same cost as replacing it with an 88.

Any suggestions or ideas?

If that is true and your cases are cracked then I would have them weld repaired before I started forking out the big bucks.

I bet the oil filters loose or the filter O ring got twisted upon installation. Suddenly leaking after sitting a while is a bit of a conundrum. Here's hoping it's something simple

I wouldn't worry too hard yet. I doubt your block cracked while the bike was just sitting there. Most likely the filter wasn't tight and it lessened up. 2nd most likely cause is a gasket that rotted out and just blew when you hit it with pressure. When you get the bike out clean everything off real well and top off the oil. Might be a good idea to have a buddy around so you can get down in front and have them crank it. If there's no abnormal noise then let it crank and run and see if you can spot the leak. On the off chance you do have a cracked block it'll be much more cost effective to have the block welded and then build the **** out of that 88 than it will be to drop a crate 103 in there.

Find the exact source of the leak before throwing the motor out. Clean it up, put more oil in, sprinkle baby powder all over the suspect area, run motor, locate the problem. Could be as simple as a crank sensor o-ring.

Tell us honestly...do you really want the case to be cracked so you can upgrade to that 103!?! If so, I really doubt it's cracked. Most likely a simple seal.
