I have an un-painted, un-primed rifle roadster fairing on order. I plan on doing a basic rattle can paint job to match the black denim paint on my bike.
Anyone have experience painting a plastic fairing to match black denim paint?
From what I've read, krylon, duplicolor, or john deere blitz black work just fine. I assume these paints wouldn't require clear coat or primer for the krylon since it is formulated for plastic.
I know that a lot of guys use rattle cans on those fairings. I would use a clear coat on it though. Fairings are going to take a lot of bug abuse. It will protect the paint and help you wash the carnage off easier.
Funny, I just ordered an unpainted, unprimed Roadster fairing yesterday. The MS gauntlet fairing I'm currently running is plasti dipped. Stuff is definitely tough, had it on for about a year and half without having to touch it up...plus it matches the black denim great.
FWIW, most plastics including ABS are a Petroleum (oil) based product. Painters use adhesion promoters when painting such items to ensure maximun, long term bonding. I like Bull Dog brand myself, it works great!
I dont have a denim black bike any longer, but when I did, I used some paint from a case tractor dealer. It was rattle can flat or matte black. It matched dead on, was super thick, and laid down super smooth. It looked so nice that a customer I had come in wanting a bobber build wanted the same paint, I didnt tell him it was rattle can tractor paint. he was pleased with the final product, and the price.
I did it. Didn't have any problems. If you do the prep work it'll turn out just fine. Didn't do a clear. John Deere paint is good stuff and cheap enough should you have a problem itd be easy to sand and repaint it.
