Default Issue with starting

I've been having this problem off and on for about a year. When I go to start the bike on some mornings I get a Vinert type code - that might not be the exact code. It kind of flickers and changes like a calculator with low batteries. At this point it won't turn over and sounds like it has a dead battery. First couple times I just charged the battery - no issue for a couple days.

Only happens if I haven't ridden for 2 or more days.

Took into the dealership while under warranty twice - they claimed there were no issues.

It is not cold at all in the mornings here.

I don't have any aftermarket electronics on the bike.

2014 Dyna FXDB.

What do you guys think?

Have you or anybody else done anything to the bike lately?

The 'VINERR' is a V.I.N. error. A loss of communication between the ICM and BCM (welcome to CAN BUS - 'controller area network') automotive companies have been using this for awhile now.

Check your wiring... let us know if you find anything..

I actually did have the dealership check the wiring. They also noted that about the code at startup. They found nothing off in those terms.

I actually have not changed anything on the bike in over a year.

Then you need to visit a different dealer... bikes don't throw codes for the hell of it... nothing off ... sounds pretty ignorant to me.

Anyway.... what work have you done to it? any wiring changes at all, even over a year ago?

I've had that code pop up three times distributed over the last 100 or so starts. Seems when it happened, it was an unusual start. Once, the bike was pretty hot, and I started it very soon after shutting it off. Regardless, they were isolated instances; the bike started (like a boss) on the second attempt. So. I haven't worried about it enough to take it to a dealer. Good luck, I hope it's random.

Check your battery cables are not loose. My 2012 does this once in a while.

I felt it sounded a bit ignorant as well to tell you the truth. The bike was under warranty at the time and I didn't want to pay another dealer to look at it just to tell me they also can't find anything wrong. I'm loosing hope in my local dealer.

I'll look it over again but I've seen nothing off with the wiring. Whenever this happens I just charge up the battery and the bike starts fine. I suppose I can leave it on the tender when it's parked but that's not solving or identifying whatever problem I actually have which is frustrating me.

In terms of other modifications - I've done nothing that added aftermarket wiring. The handlebars were added after the bike was purchased but they are stock height. That's all I really did in terms of wiring.

My 2014 low rider did that 3 or 4 times in the first few months I had it and hasn't done it since. The starter would almost stall when the code would display. It would always start just fine with 2nd attempt. I'm not sure how it fixed itself, but it did.

Mine started with the VINERR about six months after I bought it, but it was mostly after short stops like refueling. Took it to the dealer a couple of times but they 'couldn't duplicate the problem'.

Keeping it on a tender helped for a while but then it started doing it after nearly every stop. Even though the dealer said the battery tested fine, I eventually out of desperation bought a new (non-HD) one and installed it - and suddenly, problem solved!

Could be something to check into, anyway. Good luck!

As silly as this sounds, it could easily be the culprit. Tighten and clean your battery cables. I had the same problem before. A slightly loose or dirty negative wire for example can cause this.

Don't eyeball it. Take a wrench and tighten it cause it only takes a hair gap to throw it off and you can't see this.
