Show me a picture of one taken apart that has failed. The one up in post 10 was from a statement just like yours. There is no wear and it's just like brand new inside.

Well I don't know what you consider "failed" but when it won't grab the shaft when turning in the powered direction the bike won't crank. I consider that failed and replacing it solves the problem.

The problem is the way those 5 pins set down against the shoulder, they make it almost impossible for it to fail. (they ride up the slope when the gas motor starts and runs faster then the starter motor and that is the only way it slips..makes a sizzle sound if you hold starter in too long) However, I am sure a lot like you say have drove up service bills by being replaced along with the true low $ fix being thrown in for free. Not trying to argue with you. Just want you to back up your statement with something other then someone at service saying it (what I call a tin-man quote).

This is mine after being beaten with the crappy stock 07 comp, I don't know if this is what you're looking for.

When they fail the 5 rollers have flat spots worn into them & the center shaft is worn through the case hardening. I worked at an auto electric rebuilding shop for 19 years & saw many bad starter clutches from Harley starters.

So you think by the inner shaft being worn, the pins can slip by. Is the inner shaft you saw worn, the one the pins run on? Only time I had assumed the pins were actually running on this shaft was the starter had to be on and the gas motor running. Thank you.

Thank you. So you think by the inner shaft being worn, they can slip by which makes sense.
If you turn the drive gear by hand in a clockwise direction & it feels rough (like sand in the clutch) the starter clutch is bad & needs to be replaced.
