Thanks for the tips. I changed it yesterday and it starts much better. However, I do have to remove it today and install the o-ring that I did not see in the bag of parts. Ugh. Live and learn I guess. I looked at the microfiche on Ronnies HD page and there are two, with two different part numbers. One goes between the starter and inner primary and the other appears to be installed inside the housing before the clutch is inserted. If it is the one that is installed inside the housing, then the original must still be in place - just my guess that it would need to be pulled out and replaced.

Thoughts?

Thanks again.

I changed out starter clutch not long ago, and that Item 12, (o ring), was not present when I opened starter motor.. The All ***** starter clutch I installed did not come with that o ring. I could'nt see where item 12 oring would go anyway, so I put everything back together without an item 12.... Kit only came with one oring, ( item 13, primary o ring)..
I saw the same parts diagram , and was a little confused,, I think there is a mistake in the parts diagram ... Double check things if you have to, but I dont think you will need to remove start motor...

A couple of pics I took when I changed my starter clutch . No way I can see a rubber oring, in the area the diagram suggests....

Appreciate the input and pics Mark. I'll hold off on pulling it and check with my mechanic tomorrow and see what he says. Thanks again.

O-ring #12 is inside of the starter housing. No need to replace it if you didn't remove it.

Thanks Tommy C - that was driving me nuts. Now back to my other forum posts for the new problem I have.

Have a good one.

I am hearing more and more of these hot start issues and I'm leaning towards starter clutch myself. The compensator doesn't care whether the bike is hot or cold.
The other thing to keep in mind is the jack shaft is no longer piloted. I have seen where the automatic tensioner pulls the chain too tight, pulling on the transmission mainshaft will cause the ring gear to "****" inwards and now the jack shaft and the ring gear no longer line up.
You can check to see if this is happening by looking behind the ring gear between 8:00 and 10:00 on the inner primary looking for scoring marks.

And it doesnt help that the HD clutch is pretty sloppy.

Ive looked around and it seems like the issue is either starter clutch or the compensator. It only happens when the bike is hot and never on the first startup.

Any insight?

My bike is doing the same thing. It's an 09. Dealer is telling me compensator. Did you figure yours out??
