Bought the bike brand new and since day one it will hesitate to start sometimes it'll poof smoke out of the air cleaner and fail to start but then will fire right up.
Is it something stupid like the starter is garbage or a bigger issue of compression being jacked up?
usually when you get the cough back through the intake, its because you let off the starter too soon.
Mine has only done that a handfull of times and its because I let off the starter. Also letting the fuel pump prime a few seconds before hitting start helps. I turn on the ignition, turn kill switch to run, wait a few seconds or until you hear the fuel pump stop humming and then hold down the start button until it fires.

It did it this morning turned the bike on flipped the kill switch put my helmet on hit the starter held it for 6 seconds and let off, big poof out of the cleaner.
Then I drove to the gas station 3 miles approx. grabbed some stuff for work and it started fine almost immediately after hitting the switch.
I asked the dealer months back they said its a Dyna thing
Doesn't sound right, you don't say what year yours is.
I hadn't ridden my '10 fat Bob for about 4-5 years due to injury and yesterday it fired straight up (with 4-5 year old fuel), which is exactly how it normally is.
I don't know of anything specific to the Dyna line that would cause hard starting compared to any other model.
As for troubleshooting, I'd start with checking your electrical connections and making sure the battery is fully charged.

I'll have to check the amps terminals are free of corrosion
I will chime in, my Carbe'd 05 FXD does the same thing. usually not cold, but after warmup and parked for a little while, it will crank long and then I will give it gas cause it is cranking too long. When it starts, a poof of whit smoke out of the air cleaner. its not all the time, but occasionally. I read where the smoke is because of the cylinders loading up with gas, not sure if that is truly the case. In my case, I try using the enrichener on startup, even when the engine is warm, it seems to work.
