Default 2004 dyna super glide

a buddy of mine from work recently picked up a 2004 dyna super glide. Nice looking bike and all (even though it aint British). So he goes down to the local bike shop and gets himself a couple-o-quarts and a spin on and sets out to change his oil. (simple e-nuff). this mornin he asks if i can look at the bike for him and see if i can figure out why he only **** out about a qrt-n-a half of oil and now hes got too much oil in the res. I go over to his garage and ask what he did, he says he drained the oil from where this guy at the shop told him. I aint never seen such a strange setup for an oil system (and remember, all my bikes have a ZENER DIODE and a (+) ground) all i could smell was gear oil. sure enuff, he drained the tranny and filled the reservoir that he never drained in the first place. Now, all the harleys ive ever played with had the reservoir under the seat and a drainplug loc. at the base of the crank. this setup looks as if theyve made a unit constructed motor/tranny whilst still keeping the trans. as a seperate entity. WTF? dropped the oil plug out of the eng. case and all that came out was about 8oz of motor oil. can anyone tell me for certain what the correct oil cahnge procedure would be on this? Id hate to see this poor bastard take off with an empty gearbox and waste his tranny (which im assuming is re-filled from the port at the top of the outer tranny case on the right side of the machine.

Default RE: 2004 dyna super glide

There are 3 plugs on the bike from the left side there is the Primary plug. This holds 1 quart, to fill it you need to remove the derby cover, Or should I say bonnet. There are 5 screws holding it in place in a star pattern they should be torx head screws. The other two plugs are the transmission and the engine. They hold 1 quart for the tranny and 3 for the engine if you replace the filter. The fill for the engine is the hand removable dipstick to the far right. the tranny dipstick is most likely an allen head about 6 cm in from the engine oil dipstick.

Hope this helps. And your buddy should invest in a service manual they sell them on e-bay all the time they have loads of good info.
