Default 1st oil change help...

did my first oil change today but have lost my manual. i accidently drained the tranny oil instead of the motor oil, so looks like i am changing it also.

question is, what allen bolt size does the transmisison fill hole take (located on top of trans where you put fluid in at). didnt have one big enough in the tool box and dont want to go and buy the wrong size.

also, one other question...when checking the motor oil with the dipstick, do you screw the filler cap in to get an accurate reading, or do you just puch it down without screwing it in and then pull out and check the fluid level.

its on an '06 dyna

thanks in advance.

Not sure but if you have a 5/16 allen and it's too small then it should be 3/8. Yep, on my '04 FXD it's 3/8 and I don't think it was changed because of a different year.

You screw the cap all the way on then remove it and check, don't forget to have the bike on the kickstand and on level ground.
3/8 is the correct size for the tranny filler plug/dipstick.

after draining the oil put in exactally 2.5 quarts and i assure it it will be full. The trans takes exactally one quart, and when serviceing the bike you are supposed to change the trans fliud, the motor oil and the primary oil which takes 1 quart but i'ts always been full with about 1/16 of a quart left in the bottle.
I recommend syn3 20w50 in the engine, bel ray 90w140 synthetic in the trans (gets rid of a lot of clunking) and the black bottle of primary chaincase oil. Carefully check your o rings on the drain plugs and replace them if they aren't perfect atherwise you'll have seepage. Also, i don't think i even need to mention that you need to change the oil filter everytime you change the oil too.

The '06 must be different from a '99. With mine, you check the tranny fluid WITHOUT screwing it in.

"The '06 must be different from a '99. With mine, you check the tranny fluid WITHOUT screwing it in. "

hmmm...this seems more logical. by the time you screw the oil plug in and then back out with an allen wrench, it is almost impossible to tell where the oil mark was.

i changed the tranny using mobile 1 75/90 synthetic and it was a pain in the ***. when i would screw the dipstick in and screw it back out, i could not see the oil line at all. what i did was dip it in and then pull it out withough screwing it in and then "adding" on the length of the threaded part to get an estimated measurement, and it was still hard to see the oil doing that. i just filled it enough to where it was barely touching the bottom of the stick and i guestimated that was pretty close.

harley did a poor design with that chrome dipstick...especially using the mobile one oil which is almost clear in color. its almost impossible to tell where the oil is at.

i gess though, if you are supposed to check it withough screwing it in, then i am running a little bit low. anyone else know anything about checking tranny oil on an '06?

thanks

I was talking about the engine oil dipstick, for the tranny you just lower the stick in until the threads touch the hole then read it. A little low might be better cause I don't like the way we're supposed to check the tranny oil.
