Question Inner primary removal, what else while I'm there?

2007 FXDB, 20k miles.

Going from foot boards to "further forward mid controls" off a FXDL.

Other than replacing gaskets as I go, what other maintenance should I be doing while I have the inner primary removed?

Thanks

If you're pulling the primary I'd change out the shoddy auto primary chain tensioner for a Baker Attitude manual primary chain adjuster; whatever bean counter at HD ever thought an auto tensioner on an HD was a good idea should be stomped... multiple times

How many miles? Look at the rear rubber mounts and final drive belt as you need the inner off to replace them. Also be sure to replace your inner primary seal and use the shaft seal protector when you slide the inner on.

A LOT of HD "engineers" should be shot since they are mostly useless.

On my 2003 FXD you have to take the primary apart just to change the gear shift lever!

At least on later years they gave you enough space to swap out the shift lever if there is a problem.

Instead of spending a good chunk of $$ to do the work I just got a "BetterLever" and did it myself (like all HD maintenance).

20k miles. Will check belt and rear mount and replace inner primary seal.

Thanks

I would take a good look at your compensator. Examine where the sliding cam engages the compensating sprocket, looking for gouging and loss of metal. Look at the sprocket retainer for scratching where it sits inside the compensating sprocket. By monitering the condition of the compensator you can make a good decision on whether you need to replace it someday.

Also a good oppurtunity to go to the 30T front pulley if you are interested in lowering your gearing.

Thanks for this insight! I'll do a thorough inspection of the compensator.

I have considered the 30T pulley but decided to leave my stock gearing for now.

My guess is at only 20k miles the belt will still look good.

Check all oil seals at gearbox and inner primary...
