Thanks guys. I appreciate the encouragement.

I'll check out some more vids online for de-pinning the connectors. I think my problem is just that my screw driver is perhaps not small enough. And it's pretty small.

I was only able to get one out so far in about 15 minutes. Only 19 more to go...

Man there are SOOOO many useless videos trying to explain how to de-pin connectors. Blurry, zoomed out, useless crap. I kid you not... I wasted an hour and a half of my life looking for the right videos, and several hours wasted cussing trying to get the damn pins out.

Then finally... I stumbled onto two helpful videos.

I used the flat half of a bobby pin and filed off the "bulb" on the end. It worked like a charm - insert into the correct spot and twist the bobby pin to lift up the tab, and the wires came right out.

BUT - my connectors _ARE_ different from the ones in this video. First I had to reach inside with needle-nose pliers - there are two larger holes near the middle and grab those with the tips and pull out til you hear a click. That unlocks everything. Then I used a straightened paper clip to insert in the holes and unlock each wire one at a time. When inserting the paper clip, it took patience. Sometimes I got it right off. Sometimes I had to try again. But essentially, I'd insert the paperclip until it hits the back - then push inward slightly more and it would go another millimeter or so and I'd feel it stop - that would allow the wire to come out.

Now that I can do it, it's a breeze.

Got the handlebar off, and the top triple tree (1-1/2" nut??!!). The bottom triple tree is still attached because my snap ring pliers will not open wide enough to remove the snap ring (circlip) that is holding them on.

So I may have to buy another tool.

Deutsch is a snap, and my favorite!
Some of the molex connectors are awful to depin without the special tools.

Glad you got it.

Keep up the good work!

I really struggled in deciding between getting a first gen fat bob and doing a good rear fender or getting a second get and shaping in a FXDWG rear fender.

How do you like the Mustang Wide Tripper?

I'm trying to decide on a seat. Looking at the Le Pera Silhouette Deluxe Solo with gel option.

I love the Mustang wide tripper.

This is my third, had two diamond stitched wide trippers on my old Street bob and have the smooth on this one.

The only complaint I had was the diamond stitch allowed a fair amount of water in when parked in the rain.

I've done several 1000km days on wide trippers.

Cannot comment on the Silhouette but I tried a bare bones it was pretty harsh.

BIG UPDATE!

I've gotten a ton done on the bike guys. Ordered 4 seats today from JP Cycles. Going to try them on the bike (carefully) and return the three that don't win the election.
  • Mustang Wide Tripper solo (diamond stitch I think...)
  • Forward Mustang Wide Tripper solo
  • Le Pera Stubbs (gray stripes)
  • Le Pera Silhouette Deluxe Solo
Also ordered:
  • HD Service manual
  • HD Black texture paint (this is correct for my year) - other years use "wrinkle" or even a third name... dealer was very helpful on this. Going to use this to black out the rocker covers
  • Rocker cover gaskets (upper and lower)
  • Kuryakyn Alley Cat Fuel and Battery Gauge (black)
  • Kuryakyn Alley Cat Fuel Cap (black)
  • Custom Dynamics integrated LED RBT 'under the fender' light bar item 2040-0657
    (chromeglow.com)
  • Custom Dynamics Slim Line Signal Stabilizer 2050-0218 (chromeglow.com)
  • BackOFF XP Brake Light Module 1004 (chromeglow.com) - this one is compatible with LEDs

Picked up parts from the powder coater. They look AWESOME.

Flyboy's Fat Bob Build-rwebitcl.jpg

The front tire was cupped and so I chucked it and had a new tire put on. I'm positive it was out of balance and that's why it was cupped and that it was the source of the bulk of my vibration. I love the look of the blacked out rims!

Flyboy's Fat Bob Build-m6lyeqhl.jpg

Since I got my powder coating bits back (some of them), I could start installing a few things. Got the newly blacked out horn trim back on with that new Denali Soundbomb Mini horn that I picked up. Check out the video I made if you want to hear it.

Marking cut off points for the rear fender struts so I can install the RB Voodoo Fender.

And they're off. Cutting with the 3" pneumatic cut off wheel was slow and painful. After 15 minutes on one side I still hadn't cut through it all the way.
But the 7" electric Milwaukee angle grinder made quick work of both. ...annnnd there goes about 20 pounds.

Grinding down using my electric angle grinder and a 7" sanding / grinding flap wheel, 60 grit.

Flyboy's Fat Bob Build-xeny3lsl.jpg

... followed by hand sanding 180 grit and then primer.

Flyboy's Fat Bob Build-yku9b7ml.jpg

... and painted. Here's a good shot of the rear fender nubs now.

Lots more photos coming. I've done a lot more to it but that's the update for now.

Still need to install the DK Customs Thunder Torque exhaust inserts.
