Just a heads up to other FXDL owners that had the recall done. Mine didn't take. I own a 2014.5 .
I've seen a couple of other posts online who are seeing the same problem.
Apparently the barrel that hooks up to the bracket has 4 spot welds. They don't seem to hold up and will break free, resulting in your ignition switch flapping around.
One of the spot welds in my barrel completely broke through and the rest just sheared right away from the metal. The enclosed picture shows daylight through one of the spot welds that completely broke free. For a part that they say is $200.00 it seems like they'd do better than a spot weld.
Back to the drawing board HD. At this point I ahould start charging you for my time. Maybe a new set of foot pegs, courtesy of the MoCo, would be in order.
I had my 2015 ignition switch replaced a month ago. As long as the replaced switch is not cutting the motor I can deal with the housing breaking free. I'll complain and get it replaced, but it doesn't sound as if it's a safety issue. Did I read that correctly?
I've had more issues with this ignition than I can shake a stick at. I believe I'm at 3 ignition switch failures that caused the bike to shut off while riding, 2 housing replacements and finally the recall. Last time I buy a first year bike that's for sure. I was real tempted at taking a new 17 touring bike home last weekend but decided I'll wait a few years with that new engine
There are two recalls for the Ignition Switch on the 2014.5 Low Riders.
First one was to replace the top motor mount ignition switch bracket and the second was to replace the ignition switch.
I decided to relocate my switch to get it off the engine to avoid the engine vibrations and to allow for the installation of a Wards Fan setup with a horn relocation.
Something to keep in mind is to keep a 220 ohm resistor in your bag or pocket. If the ignition switch fails and kills
your bike you can pull the switch connector at the switch and jump the two terminals with the resistor. Doing so will power up your bike and will get you home. You can get a 5 pack of 220 ohm resistors at Radio Shack for a little more than a dollar.
