Default 1st time Harley Buyer 2003 100th lowrider need opinion

Hello all. First time to post and getting ready to buy my first Harley. Rode rice burners as a kid but now grown into a 6'5" 290 pound man. I have a friend with a 2003 100th anniv Lowrider with thousands of extras including Vance hines etc. only has 7K miles on it never dropped heated grips Willie H skulled up and dropped in back i think 3 inches. already has the 10K harley service. question is price wise he wants 7200.00 bike feels a little small on me but I have been reading up about ape hangers to help and someone mentioned 3 inch add onto the current forward control and raise it back up to original height. I honestly am looking at this bike because he is a good friend and is a car and bike guy as in a professional mechanic and i know it has been well taken care of and hot rodded a bit. He just sold a 97 fat boy custom now selling this to make more room in the garage for his next car build. He also has many of the original parts and the windshield. I think down the road i would buy a bagger just trying to see if this would be a good jumping in point. I think i will ask him to come down in price though Opinions? I will post a couple pics of it. And thanks again for your input!

Bike is a personal thing - hard for one guy to tell another - good..., bad..., or otherwise

Price wise - not bad..., not great..., but not bad

Bling wise - totally personal

Between the seat..., pegs..., and bars - you can get it to fit Ya

Being your first bike - you'll find stuff you like..., other you don't

Biggest discovery will be - do you like riding..., otherwise it'll end up being a lawn ornament

imo - biggest priorities: make it safe..., make it comfortable

Safe = change fluids / brakes..., grease axles / check bearings..., torque bolts..., oil cables..., adjust clutch..., ensure lights working..., check battery age..., check tire wear / balance / air pressures

Comfort = seat / handle bars (and handle bar adjustment) / suspension

Get a service and parts manuals (the real ones)

You'll need a bike jack (don't ask for a recommendation, already a **** storm about which one on the general forum)

Plan to spend the time going through it before riding it

As for you - take lessons.., then practice in a parking lot

Bikes do not suffer fools - at all

Ghost,
thanks for the opinions. The price as far as I have found in my area seems very good for the extras and low miles, what would you consider a great price? I might have to negotiate some

The pull back on those bars would be cramped for you. Apes would work to stretch you out.

I'm wondering how that 3 inch drop is going to hold up to 290 lbs? Nothing new shocks can't correct.

As said above, go over everything and at least take a riding course.

The best price is the one you feel gave you the best bargain and the lowest price the seller would accept. If priced at $7,200 I'd bet he wants $7,000 but $6,500 wouldn't be out of the ball park.

Riding course booked for next weekend as a refresher. i have gone for some rides on harleys after my rice rocket days as a kid ,which i rode pretty well and I know riding a harley is different feel so definitely taking the course on the bikes provided before i roll on the ride with my own.
PS if I could get your mechanic in your avatar pic to help put on the apes that would be great

Reduced lean angle will take the most adjustment. Be careful. Hard parts touch down easy and can obviously unsettle the bike catastrophically.

I think those low-mileage garage queens are great deals.

budget for new tires if those are originals. Even if the tread looks good, 13 year old tires are no bueno. The lowering is a bit concerning (at least to me), but that can be undone.

Does the owner still has the original parts he could throw in?

The average retail on the bike is about $5700 but the NADA and Kelly prices are basically just a starting point. I ran across a 08 FXDWG last year with 4200 and was able to get it down to $8500 before snatching it up. The price he is asking is not bad but not great, I would would aim for the $6500 range. Price will depend on how eager he is to sell. With 7K miles in 13 years it is obvious he rides very little and may be wanting to dump it as it is basically just taking up space and not being used which an work in your favor.

All the add ons and extras when selling have little impact in getting higher prices unless you find someone that is looking for that exact look or add ons.

That said the bike appears to have been well taken care of and is in really great shape for 13 years just based on the pics.

I am 6'7" so with your height I think adding a set of 3" extensions to the forward controls which is easily done will add to the comfort factor for you. My guess is those bars may make it feel a little cramped, adding some Apes or mini apes will likely open up the cockpit a bit for you. The 3" lowering in the rear with your height and weight I believe will need to be changed which again is easily done to bring it back to stock height
Check with your friend as to when the tires were installed I would almost be willing to be they may be originals. If so that needs to be the very first thing you replace right away before going any further than just a ride around the block. The 08 I picked up had tires that looked great but were the originals. When I picked that bike up 200 miles away I wanted to ride it home but put it on a trailer instead because I did not want to trust the tires. If those tires are over 4-5 years old plan to replace them as soon as you get it.

With all that said if you like the bike $7200 is not bad but I would shoot for the $6K range and be happy at $6500. Keep in mind for your budget that you will likely want to replace the bars and tires right away as well as suspension

Just my personal opinion, that bike is overpriced. Any extras on a bike are worth nothing to the new owner unless those extra add-ons are the EXACT add-ons or options you are looking for or would be looking to add yourself. Extra chrome, aftermarket seat, exhaust, custom paint....really dosent add to the asking price (or shouldn't) unless those are things you as the new buyer would want specifically. I guess you could sell some of the extras after the fact, but that's a hassle in itself.

I think you can do a lot better and newer for $7k+ for a dyna. I just helped my neighbor find a 2010 Wide Glide with under 3k miles in immaculate condition for that same price range. On top of that, locally by me there was a 2012 Super Glide with 800 miles for $7500, 2011 Super Glide with 1600 miles for $6500, ect. Deals are out there...just keep looking and be patient. Unless I live in an area where deals are falling from the sky, you can do a lot newer and better for $7k+.

Again, just my opinion....offer $6k or keep looking.
