To be honest, the dealer did my 1000 mile service and didn't tell me what weight they used, but i know it's regular oil and not synthetic. I did take my trip about 300 miles after that service when I started hearing the tapping.
No windshield for me either. Knowing what the sound actually is doesn't bother me too much now, the engine noise on the Sportster was way louder and that didn't bother me either.
Just bothered me not knowing what it was or if it was causing any kind of damage since it came on suddenly. I'll most likely pick up the Rockouts for a scenario when my rockers would be serviced anyway versus going out of my way to disassemble everything just to fix the noise. I don't have a motorcycle jack or torque wrench at the moment. (Anyone know what service interval it would make sense to install it, or if a dealer would even be willing?)
This thread has been real helpful though, appreciate the comments.
I thought the S comes with Syn from the factory, and that's what the dealer would use for a service? I know mine did by default. When I specified "make sure you use syn" when dropping it off, they said the S only gets Syn...

Are you using Mobile 1 vTwin or Amsoil synthetic oil? If you are you can quiet the motor by running Dino oil or a "thicker" synthetic oil. Are you running with a windshield?
Exactly !!. On my Road King the motor was quiet up to the point I started running synthetic oil or shortly afterwards. I rode with it for thousands of miles having to wear ear plugs it was so noisy. One day I decided to switch to a good dino oil (I chose VR1 but any conventional would have the same results). It took a few hundred miles and then all of a sudden is quieted down, almost like a blockage was finally cleared. It ran with normal valve train noise from there on out. If your running a full synthetic, I recommend you give it a 300-400 miles experiment and run conventional oil in it. You've got nothing to lose, just be patient as it took a little while for me.

Good to know if I ever went synthetic, but it already has conventional At least that's what they told me, and they charged me less, so I doubt they would have put synthetic unless there was a miscommunication with the tech.
I just switched from Mobil 1 to amsoil, the amsoil makes the tick noticeable louder.
I used 20w40 Mobile 1 and Amsoil in all 3 holes of 4 TC's. All 4 clattered, clunked into gear and slight slip from clutch at start out. 2 years ago I went with 15w40 Rotella dino oil in the primary, better clutch feel and no slippage. Synthetic gear lube in the trans, quieter engagement, smoother. easier shifts. Mercruiser Quicksilver 20w50 vTwin oil in the crankcase, Quieted TC noise by 80% when motor is hot. This synthetic pours like oil, not like water. I have run this combination for 2 years and found it much better then 20w50 syn in all 3 holes. No mechanical issues.
