Who's installed RT Gold Valves on a FXDX/T front end? These are the Showa Adjustable forks for those who don't know.
Ive looked numerous times for info in installation but came up empty every time. I can't for the life of me figure out how they install on these front ends. Any info is appreciated!
The Gold valves go in the end of the cartridge. You need the tools to remove the spring. Once the cartridge is removed you drill out a dimple or 2 in the end of the cartridge and remove a ring. The compression valve comes out.. IIRC you need to disassemble the valve and use some of the pieces to assemble the new valve.. Based on the bike weight and rider style entered at the racetech web site, assemble sim stacks into the valve and reassemble.. The hardest part is really unloading the spring which you have to do for a forking oil change anyway.
bwoltz - kind of makes sense. Ive taken these apart before and you're right, removing the spring from the damper rod assembly is the hardest part. I'm just having a hard time figuring out where the valves go/attach to, do they sit inside the damper rod/tube itself?
Its a shame no ones done this before with pics. BTWI have the compression and rebound valves from RT, so im sure theat makes it more difficult.
I didn't know that Raceteck did rebound valve also.. I've only installed the compression valve. The compression valve sits at the end of the tube and the fork lower bolt screws into it. The rebound valve is on the bottom end of the damping rod. I've not messed with that one.
It's worth getting Thede's book on suspension as he shows a number of the fork configurations. It don't show the newer dirtbike systems but the Showa forks on the DX are pretty much conventional shim stack cartridges with low speed compression and rebound adjustments.
BTW, The kit comes with a DVD to help with the mods..Also are you sure about the rebound valve? Just went to their web sight and they say their part number has to end in C to get rebound valves. FXDX number is FMGV S2043.
Positive about the rebound valve, tech support said they don't advertise it on their site but it is available. You're correct on the comp valve part# but the rebound# is like FMK*** something if I remember correctly, Ill have to check when I get home.
I thought it went in between the leg and the rod, but I wasn't sure. its been a while since Ive had them forks apart, I think it will make more sense when its all apart and I can see everything.
The gold valves came with not so great instructions and apparently they're "going green" it has it written all over the box, so I'm guessing all the info is online now. I'm going to try and tackle this in the next few days so If I can figure out how to post pics, ill definitely put them up here since apparently they don't exist.
Inserting pics on this site is pretty easy from a computer.. From a phone it sucks tho Crapatalk might have some easy method.. From a computer, position the cursor where you want the pic in the replay / post box and click the "Insert Image" Icon. You can drag and drop the picture from the file manager to the new open box. I'd resist doing more than one pic at a time as I add text between the pics.. Repeat for more than one.. I suspect you can add text in the picture menu and reorder the pics but I've not figured out how to do that.
Originally when I did my forks, the online program picked 0.9 kg/mm for my weight.. They also recommended 10w oil.. Forks were stiff.. If I run the same calculator now I get 0.785.. I found that I was only using about 4 inches of travel. Forks have about 5.4 inches plice another 0.35 hydraulic stop. I need to go to a lighter spring.. BTW stock spring measures at about 0.6 kg/mm
I later found that recommended RT 10w is really closer to 5wt Spectro / Maxima.. While I've not changed the spring yet, going from 10wt to 5 wt really only seems to effect the low speed adjustment. High speed damping was a little softer but not much.. I suspect the high speed shim stack is affected less by oil weight than the low speed orifices.
Well I tried to upload a couple pictures the last two days, but I guess the moderators have not approved them.
The part numbers are
Rebound: FRGV S02
Comp: FMCV S2043
Bwoltz, Im going to try and get them in this weekend, maybe Monday since I have work off and tech support will be working because I know Ill need them. I appreaciate your help.
Ill take pics of the process and try to get them uploaded for anyone else who might do this in the future.
