There are tons of other places on a Harley that are overweight and under performing. The frame being the worst offender. That and the swingarm.
You won't get an arguement from me! With every change I make, I try to consider weight. It's not my primary concern but I try to add lightness when possible/practical. Unfortunately, an aluminum swingarm or frame is way out of my price range.
The heim joint linkages I've installed have not affected shifter weight. They provide better feel at the lever than the OE linkage. I buy heim joints like the ones below and use the stock shifter rod. The parts can be polished to a shiny finish with Semichrome, Never-Dull, Flitz, etc.
I'm looking to make or buy a new shift linkage as I don't particularly like the style of my current one. It's a nice piece; chromed billet with heim joints. I just want something simple to kinda disappear but still function beautifully.
ANYway... Has anybody experienced a difference in shift feel between a heavy steel linkage and a light aluminum one?
I'm guessing it isn't noticeable, but I figured I'd ask.
I'd rather shed weight but if a heavy shifter feels better (like in some cars)...what's a few ounces for a good feeling?
My wife had forward controls put on a Dyna a few years back and it def affected the feel of the shift because of all the linkage. My shifter is at stock mid and it's the quietest and smoothest I've ever experienced with any motorcycle. I think the more linkage there is between the foot peg and the trans lever, the more your going to feel a difference usually negatively.

A forward control linkage is the best candidate for heim joints. Heim joints eliminate the slop on the ball and socket end of the stock linkage.
