Default Stator cover removal problem

Harley wants 800$ to replace my stator. Which is insanity to me. So Ive begun the DIY. I've got everything apart and I'm down to the rotor/stator cover. I pull the cover and get stuck on a lip that seems to only be there to force me to dismantle my entire primary. Any one know a work around? Im not really in the mood to dismantle the entire transmission just to get the stator cover off. The lip seems to have one purpose, and that is to force guys like me to take my ride into the shop. Thoughts? I may take a grinder to it since it's seems to serve zero purpose.

You won't be the first guy to grind that lip out. Probably won't be the last.

You might stick some rags around the shafts to keep the dirt out

I'd pull the inner primary and grind the lip in case it has to be replaced again. Speaking of which, I would only replace a stator or r/r with Cycle Electric units, never OEM.

I just replaced mine last week. I just ground the inner primary down with a die grinder.

Yea that. Even took the time to give it a nice smooth finish.
