Default 2000 cam tensioners

I have been talking with the local mechanic about replacing the the chain tensioners on my dyna. I have 40k on my bike, no noise but am thinking it's probably a good idea.
He wants to put in a gear setup and replace the cam and lifters as well. Possibly a new oil pump. talking at least a 1,000.00. Should I go this far, or is this over kill?

Yes. Go for it. More power and reliability. Gears are based upon your crank run out. Your motor has a better crank and the timken bearings which should mean that your run out would be less than the newer style allowing for gear driven cams. Always do lifter when you do a cam swap and better cam bearings. This is a win win scenario

Are you happy with your bike as is? If so, it may be overkill for you personally.

Change the shoes (maybe with Cyco brand). Possibly change the Cam bearings.

Then enjoy the bike

I agree with Multi. If you have to ask, it's probably overkill.

That said, I'd do it (myself, so lower cost). Personally.

Ask yourself this OP:

How does your "mechanic" know what you "need" before he pulls the cam cover?

On my 02 I put in cams at 22K with the cam chain shoes and a 95" kit, and at 44K went ahead put in the cam hybrid plate. This has the hyd. cam chain shoes and improved oil pump. Either way would work.

You might want to think about a new camplate too.. Many 2000 bikes had loose fitting out cam bearings in the cam plate. In fact if made before 12/1999, it probably has a ball rear bearing and should be replaced..

The mechanic should be asking you what your desired intention is? do you just wish to inspect/replace cam shoes? this takes about 20 minutes on a Dyna ( the inspection part). If you just want to know that it is reliable, that's a $400 job here. If you want/need more performance, then you might consider cams. Gear drives are pretty noisy, but have low rolling friction. You may then be into carb mods, ignition change, etc in order to take advantage of more cylinder fill.

If there are any 99/00 bikes still out there with the suspect rear cam bearing, they haven't been ridden much, most have been updated, by now. the factory cam plate is just fine for street use. The oil pump is adequate also. If you have it in the budget, and want the extra performance, yes. If you just want your bike reliable, inspect/replace the shoes and run it.
