I think that's the same backing plate I had. Not sure if it was stock or P&A, but it was under a football cover with a K&N filter (and Mikuni HSR42) when I bought the bike.
There is a Mikuni-supplied adapter that slips on the carb inlet to let it work with the three bolt filters. I still have the backer somewhere. I'll try to remember to dig it up tomorrow.
I believe the support bracket gets sandwiched between the adapter and backer.
