I always feel that leaving the bike 'up in the air' for a longish period of time would surely put a strain on the front end ? With the forks fully extended the springs would stretch and weaken ? Just my thoughts...b.
I've always wondered about this also... TinCup? Comments?
I have a vague notion that forks are designed to be loaded, and therefore some sort of problem may develop if they are completely unloaded for extended periods of time. But I really have absolutely no idea.
I do store my other bike on front and rear stands all winter, but they both lift from the axles, so the suspension remains loaded by the weight of the bike.
I do inflate the tires on the Dyna to their recommended max prior to storage to reduce any potential for flat spotting, and sometimes I roll it a foot or so... but I've never had any storage-related issues.
Wait, that's not entirely true... One year I found a large (but vacant) mouse nest inside the airbox of my other bike.
I would not think that stretching the spring would weaken it. On the contrary being stretched out is the spring trying to get back to it's natural state. But sitting with the spring loaded would eventually weaken them. Not uncommon for me to find weak springs on bikes that are 30 or 40 years old. But I've also seen a lot of bikes that don't have weak springs the same age.
Long story short. Weakening the springs over 1 year is a non issue to me.
As for flat spotting the tires? I just bought a 08 Lowrider last year that had sat for over 2 years and no flat spotting or weak springs.
It doesnt need to be completely off the ground. Just lift it enough to take some of the weight off the suspension but not enough that the wheels are off the ground......its as subjective as whats best on a pizza, let your own common sense dictate what gives you peace of mind. Side note: take the $ youd spend on an expensive jack and take the mrs out on the town and give her the memories she will need to get her through in your absence......now thats $ well spent....safe travels and watch your 6.
