Default Stand/lift question

I will be headed overseas for a year and don't plan to sell my bike. Since the wife can't ride it I thought I'd just put it on a lift until I get back.

Are there any stands that you guys use/recommend? I need something that isn't going to fail on me while I'm gone.

There is a lot of stands or lifts out there. All of them should have a locking device to keep bike up off the ground without relying upon the hydraulics to support it.

With thyat being said, if you use the lift a lot then maybe an expensive one is the way to go. If it's just to hold it up while you are gone, save some mnoney and go to Harbor Freight.

Just my thought

With the expense of these bikes there is only one lift I'd trust for long term storage of any HD; a J&S. The J&S is an expensive option, but so is my Wide Glide

My Wide Glide is always on the J&S when she's not being ridden; she's been sitting on the J&S since late November with absolutely no issues. The J&S uses locking arms that drop in to the lift frame, from there you open the hydraulic release valve and drop pressure on the bottle and the weight settles on the lift frame, it's not being supported by the pressure of the hydraulic bottle.

The J&S is designed to work perfectly with the Dyna, no adapter blocks required...

Default Lift

I just bought a PitBull. Pricey but a great lift. would have no issue leaving my RG on it for a year.

Buy a scissors jack and you`ll be all set. That is all you need.

I always feel that leaving the bike 'up in the air' for a longish period of time would surely put a strain on the front end ? With the forks fully extended the springs would stretch and weaken ? Just my thoughts...b.

That's the reason I don't keep my Fat Bob up in the air. With the forks extended over the winter months I think that the seals might leak when I lower the bike to the ground. I might be wrong but better safe than sorry.

Wouldn't it be better than flat spotting the Tires? Or would new tires be cheaper once I add in expense of lift?

You can get by just as easy with the Sears Red or Harbor Freight jack and the modification. They all have that lowering stop that TinCup mentioned
Or,
Just take an auto jack and some wood blocks to get the bikes complete weight off the suspension and tires,, the bike doesn't need to be completely in the air.
"Flat Spotting" tires isn't as big a deal as it was 30yrs ago,, they're made of modern compounds right?
Don't over think it,, if you need new tires when you get back so what? Get new tires.

If I knew I was going to store for a full year, I have fresh oil and fluids in it, Full tank with stabilizer (any stabilizer), I'd actually "fog" the engine (something I don't do for winter storage), battery removed and just wood block it in a corner and have it covered.

p.s. I have the Sears Red jack and have done this modification like many-many others here,, works fine.

Unless you just want one,you don't need one. I leave mine backed into the corner hooked to a tender and covered. If you have cats pull the seat. It's a 09' and have been doing this for years.Dont forget a little fuel stabilizer. Too easy.
