Default Vin error

So first off, I live in ireland, and the weather is **** most of the time so my 13 street bob spends way to much time in the garage.

Normally I keep her on a charger but last time I had her out I forgot to plug it in, not only that but I didn't turn the ignition off, yes I'm a dick.

So we are having one of our rare warm days today and decided to go out for a spin. So as you can expect the battery was completely flat.

It has been on the charger for hours now and when I turn the ignition on the mileage flashes a few times and when I change the trip it shows Vin Error.

Have I totally ****ed the battery or is there something I need to do to get her going?

Any help much appreciated.

Jonny

VIN error means that the speedometer is not recognized by the ECM. This usually occurs because you have installed an aftermarket ECM (Replacement EFI Tuner) or have replaced the speedometer with a used one (already married to a different ECM). It's also possible that the speedometer or ECM memory somehow got corrupted. New speedometers will accept recorded mileage from the ECM and once synched will only work with that particular ECM. I don't know if there is a way to reset the speedometer to act as new and accept a new marriage to a new ECM. The ECM is programmed to complain if it doesn't recognize the speedometer. The ECM wants to know that the Speedometer is displaying the correct mileage for your motorcycle.

OK, having said all that, the bike should still start and run even with the VIN error assuming that the battery is charged properly. I think the MPH / KPH needle should still work too.

issue is I haven't changed anything since its last use and she came from belfast HD when I bought her so been no messing around with it.

Would the battery being drained cause this?

Another reason that I enjoy having an older bike. Good luck getting back up and running! This kind of thing happens with cars at work, and often requires a factory scan tool to resolve... It's a PITA.

I don't know if leaving it turned on while the battery dies would cause that. I would hope not but guess anything is possible.

Can you start it right now or not? I am pretty sure it should start if the VIN error is the only thing wrong.

If you're sure the battery is OK, it may be as simple as disconnecting the speedometer or the battery and reconnecting. Try pulling the main fuse and reinserting, or maybe just the speedo / console fuse and reinserting. That may clear it.

Otherwise, sounds like you may be in for a trip to the dealer where you bought it. If that's too far away, at least give them a call and see if there's a local shop that you can take it to.

That's what I was talking about EFI tuner, FP3 ....
Try taking main fuse out, take the FP3 out of the circuit and then reinstall the main fuse. If your speedo comes back OK, it's likely some problem with the FP3.

Did you install that or did it come from the dealer with that?
If you installed it call them for help, otherwise the dealer.

The bike won't start at all, won't even try to turn over which is why I just initially thought it was the battery.

I will try he main fuse to see what happens

cheers

Sounds like you're due for a new battery, regardless.

What other mods does the bike have?
FP3 is something I'd look at.
