Default Trick to putting the headlight o-ring back on?

I got one of the daymaker LED lights for my 2012 Wide Glide. The kind without the HD logo so it didn't cost me an arm and a leg. Plugged in the new light no problem and it looks great. However, I can't get the metal o-ring that goes around the light tightened back all the way. I have about a half inch gap. Is there a trick to putting it back on? Does it have to be in a certain spot or done a certain way? Doesn't anyone know what size screw that is and what size tool I need?

The O-ring? Or the Trim ring? Pictures?

If it is the trim ring you are talking about, they can be a pain in the *** sometimes, depending on headlight construction.

Is it the harley light? I bought an after market light and it won't fit in my bucket correctly. It's about half an inch to big.
I've looked for a little deeper bucket with no luck.

Good luck...

It all depend on which bucket you have, and which trim ring, and what length screw that's on your trim ring. All obstacles can be overcome with perseverance.

Yeah the outer trim ring. I'm going to try and find a replacement screw tomorrow and try putting it on again.

This makes no damn sense

Ring came off the bucket to begin with - so that should fit

You saying there a half inch gap between the ring and headlight??

And it a 5 3/4" headlight?

How is the headlight not too small for the bucket then

===================

Ring on backwards

Headlight not actually 5 3/4"

And did you index the headlight when installing (there is a notch it needs to fit into)

Some of the aftermarket lights have a thicker outer bevel than the factory light. In my case I needed either a longer screw, or a slightly fatter outer ring, both of which worked perfectly. A buddies bike that I installed the same light into had a slightly different 5 3/4 bucket combo, and his fit perfectly.

I agree with Ghost.

The outer flange/ring on my Chinese clone light is a bit thicker than the one on a sealed beam so the steel mounting ring doesn't fit quite the same.

If that's your problem, you may need to just deal with it or start modifying parts (headlight or bucket/ring).

I know on my Motone buckets the clamp ring is not symmetrical. There is a front/back and it only fits properly one way. Not sure about the MoCo bucket and trim/clamp but worth trying it both ways.

According to the microfiche, the screw is an 8-32x1" fillister head. Pan head or button head may need a bit of grinding to reduce the OD of the head. Socket cap screw (allen) would probably work OK. Either way, you will be able to find something that works at the local hardware store.

My vote it's backwards. I recently had to make a repair to a passing light on my street bob and discovered that there is a back and a front to the retaining ring. My thought as I was buttoning up the thing was "why so freakin difficult, it came off easy enough" I flipped it around and it snapped right into place.

Here's a picture of what I'm talking about. It's not on backwards because I did that first and it wouldn't even fit backwards. So I guess my bolt went on at an angle. Problem now is my dumbass screwed with it so much that the little Phillips head bolt is mostly stripped. And with it sideways I'm dealing with the forks so it's not easy getting anything tools in there at a straight angle. Anyone got any suggestions for getting a stripped screw back off?
