Idle cable has a sprung on the carb end,works as a stress/pull buffer.with out it you risk snapping the end off the cable.
throttle housing side of things, the ends are different in size diameter as well,at least in the "push in" style. Keeps you from mixing them up ,can't interchange them.

Some have removed the spring cable and retract by hand. Modifying it is crazy easy. I hear you get used to it pretty easy but, I'm not ready to cross over and leaving mine alone.....maybe someday.
People been running single cable throttles for decades. The idle cable gives you the capability to close the throttle using the handgrip... it's a safety feature basically.
