You talking about the flames? Probably didn't clearcoat over it. If it's coming off that easy I would think a little solvent would take it off providing you are careful not to harm the clearcoat under it (assuming it was just painted over the factory clearcoat). What did the guy say when you took it back to him?

well . he said he could check it in a month. so i am taking it off here. got one side 90% done. no he did not clear over it. i think perhaps he did not get all my wax off before he painted it . i am not real happy with him because he told me he was booked up . my thoughts are he should take care of jobs he perhaps did not do correct before doing other jobs.

my fingernails are doing a good job but i have rubbed them all down now. i am afraid to use any solvent as i might mess up my black paint. i am using some bug and tar remover to get the small spots off. to be honest i do not know much about solvents and such . thanks much for any other advice ...been working on the one side for over 4 hours.....

The clear coat is probably a 2-part urethane which is quite resistant to solvents.

I would try to remove new paint using as mild a solvent as possible. First test it underneath where it won't show.

If it works - it may dull the clear coat a bit underneath it. If so, you can probably buff it out - or worst case, have a new clear coat applied.

Solvents kind of range as follows (mild to harsh)

Alchohol
mineral spirits
xylene
laquer thinner
mek (methyl ethyl keytone)

most 2-part urethanes are resistant to MEK rubs, but it will dull the surface a little.

Just test whatever you do because you can't go back once you've started.

PS - as stated, a clear coat over your paint job would have protected it properly

thanks much for that info..one side done 99% . i used some fine cut cleaner when i got all the paint off but some specs. no buffer used..just done by hand.

I do not think i will have this guy do anymore work for me. i was thinking perhaps a clay bar now on the one side that is mostly finished ?

Thanks once again for the advice..sure sounds like you have done some painting ?

I haven't done painting of cars or bikes...

but my business involves applying a special 2-part coating to glass for architectural applications. As such, we deal with coatings quite a bit, and we often do "effects" involving a base coat and clear coat finishes. I am quite familiar with coating chemical tests and the effects of various solvents.

Glad things are working out - I hate when scares like this happen. Best of luck finishing the job up, I'm sure it will come out well.

for sure. and paint and bikes are not cheap . i guess i am a finatic about keeping my bike looking good. i think most of us are though.thanks again . i suppose i could have done the job 100 times faster if i knew anything about paint.

I may make a run to a very good painter i know tomorrow. see if he can ge tthe other side done for me. he has been doing my cars for many years. his specialty is vetts. so he knows about paint . rained all evening here anyways.no riding that was for sure .
