Default Help 99 dx restoring mids issues plz assist

Alright like it says restoring mid controls on this 99 dx that someone put forwards on. It has a flat inspection cover. Cannot find a damn inspection cover online with a hole in it in black. But I could just paint or powdercoat a chrome one. That's not really the issue the issue is this plus in the back of primary how do I remove that without taking the whole damn thing a part seems to be room to pop it out and install shaft. Anyone do this?

You can't install the shifter shaft into the primary without pulling the inner primary cover. PCing a chrome cover is fine..

There's no "holder", it's just an O-ring,, there's no pressure in the case.
These factory "exploded view" parts lists can help you understand what is supposed to be in there.

The hole has been plugged.. It should be nothing more than a piece of metal or plastic with o rings but it's hard to tell what was done in your case.. They might have simply glued something in the hole.. Still you have to pull the inner primary to install the arm/shaft that goes through the hole and you need the plastic sleeve that holds the shaft along with the clip that holds the sleeve in place.

Thanks ok yeah I new there had to be something because I got the right inspection cover with a hole in it and looking at the size of the plugged hole I new there had to be some kind of shaft spacer or cover to make it all snug but yeah I've already accepted I'm pulling the primary off thanks for your help y'all my first twin cam 88. Went from vrod to new street glide and bought this as a project

Definately looks plugged. After you remove the inner, you may be able to find a way to remove the plug - if not, then you will need a new inner primary...

Even if you are able to remove the plug, make sure that surface around the plug is undamaged. That surface must have a tower gasket installed for mids and if damaged it may not seal properly.

I love mids, worth every penny spent for me - I had to buy a new outer primary plus the mids, etc.

That doesn't look "plugged" to me,, they just cut the original shaft off.
There's probably some fabricated "keeper" on the other side.

One thing to note on the 5 speed motors. There isn't a gasket for the shift shaft hole but plastic sleeve and O ring.. Sleeve extends to the outer cover.
