Isn't sag also so the wheel can also extend instead of just compressing? This way the wheel never leaves the pavement and you don't get launched off the seat.
Yes..., no..., sort of
Proper sag setting should put you in the middle of the shock's stroke - however
That assuming you have stock length shocks..., and the proper springs
Should one..., the other..., or both - be off (shorter shocks..., or too stiff springs for example)
Then setting sag properly - could throw off where in the stroke of the shock you're actually at
Throwing off compression and rebound..., and throwing off the suspension's ability to maintain tire contact with the road
Some time in the mid 2000's HD change the forks on the Dynas where it is typical that the forks had to be removed to do a fork oil change, I think it was in 2006. I changed the springs in my '02 SuperGlide to Progressive standard height fork springs, the front is so nice now, it's like a different bike. Good luck with your project.
All the fluids have been changed now, plus the new front tire. As much as Harley wants to make money, the service manager told me today that even if the bike is 17 years old, he wouldn't bother with the fork oil change until the 50K service. So may suggestions...but "better safe than sorry" makes the most sense. Thanks for all the tips!
Nice ride fungramps.
I'm shocked they quoted 4 hours. Yikes.
Thanks. I found a local wrench yesterday, and was pretty impressed. Works out of his own shop near his home. He told me he would charge 1hr at 68.00. He's pretty booked, but probably well worth waiting for. I won't be visiting the dealership again any too soon.

When I lived on Camano Island I used a local guy in Stanwood. He was great. Now I live in Chehalis so I'm kinda stuck with the Olympia dealer.
Like TinCup said, change em all at the beginning and put the forks and brake fluid on a routine change regardless of miles. You wouldn't believe how gross that fork oil looks even after a year. So much so, you'll want to flush the forks with clean fluid which I subscribe to.

I trust my Indy. He just changed my fork oil on my '03. He said it was a tough job, it had never been done. I bought the bike in 2011, and it only had 2k miles. I have 40k miles now, and I never had it done.
He quoted me 3 hours. 1 hour sounds overly optimistic.
