About 10k on my Hayden. I've tried all types of oil in the primary.. and have settled with the same oil I put in my engine, Mobil 1 vtwin 20/50.
Synthetics will not muffle engine/valve train noise like a standard fixed grade... and HD Syn3 will make your engine sound like you've got marbles bouncing around in there.
As for the 'metal chunks'... next time you're 'in there'.. pull your clutch pack and take a look at the splines that run next to the primary bearing: 9 will get you 10, you've got fractured splines... the compensator is not the only thing that suffers from an over tight chain.
