So to get myself up to speed...the noise seemed to be coming from the tensioner, right? Did you try removing the tensioner and turning it over to see if it still made noise? Or maybe remove the chain and just spin the cams?

Hi Reindeer... I was just filming your suggestion while you were typing!

In this video, I have the oil pump, cam plate, and sprockets a little bit more than hand tight. The front tensioner is not installed, the rear is. The back side of the plate was not taken apart at all. The only pushrod in place is the one in the noisy spot, the front intake. I can't figure this out... I wish I could see the inside clearly while this is happening!

It only makes the noise with the front pushrod installed, but if you remove it and spin it no noise?

What if you remove the chain and just spin the cams (making sure your pistons aren't at TDC of course)?

Have you tried a different lifter in that position?

Good suggestions. I did spin the motor with no pushrods before opening the cam chest, and there was no noise. I removed the pushrods one at a time, checking for the noise after each one. It only went away after removing the front intake (although the others were already removed at that point... I suppose I could try putting all three except the front intake in also...).

I tried swapping the pushrod, but I haven't tried swapping the lifter. I'll try that next.

Per Reindeer's thoughts, I swapped the lifter in question with one from the rear cylinder. No change, same noise. Then I removed the front chain (left the back intact), and rotated the engine from the rear cam pulley, again with the only pushrod in the suspect spot. It made a noise in the same place.

So... Ruled out through testing, as well as I can determine:

Pushrod
Lifter
Front tensioner
Front chain

I guess the next thing would be to try only the other lifter and pushrod.

Yes, I'll do that next. Unfortunately I have an appointment I have to run out for tonight, so I'm probably in a holding pattern for a day or two now since I work late the next couple of nights.

You've also eliminated the oil pump, crank bearings, pistons, etc. Which is good.

So right now the only thing moving is the cams, rear cam chain, cam bearings, rear tensioner, one lifter/pushrod, one rocker arm, and one valve spring, right? So it pretty much has to be one of those things. You've already eliminated a few of them.

Damn, wish you lived close so I could see and hear it in person.
