Default rear axle

I'm trying to remove bob's rear tire for the first time and have done everything in the service manual up to step 12, "Remove axle from wheel." I can spin in with a wrench, but otherwise can't get the damn thing to budge. How the heck does this thing come out? Should I pound it out? Any help is much appreciated.

I helped a buddy take off a rear tire from his fat boy and used a breaker bar that was about two feet long. Of course I think he needed a 1.5 inch socket for the one side. What a pain.

Bump the end of it with a plastic mallet, not a steel hammer or you will damage the threads. Your axle has corroded inside the spacer most likely. After you get it removed, put some anti-sieze on it before you put it back in.......pg

Thread the axle nut back on the axle several turns but make sure the axlestays recessed inside the nut. This will help prevent screwing up the threads on the axle. Place the wide side of a 2" x 4" against the axle nut and strike it.

Make sure you use anti-seize when you reinstall the axle.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. Even once I got it started it would never release and slide out so I had to use a wooden dowel to punch the thing the entire way out, left swingarm to right swingarm. I'm going to make sure all parts are clean of all the junk before assembly. Here's the fruits of my labor.

MCB, sad isn't it? What's your Bob, an '06? And the axle is already a B1tch to get out. Imagine what it would havebeen like in another year from now? Last year my scoot had 7200 miles on it and same thing, pitted and rusted. Had a Sporty before and had to use a 15 lb sledge. Toasted the axle, bent the swingarm. I called the factory and they told me," Oh yes sir we put anti-sieze on all of our axles." BULLCHIT!!!! Tim

hit a nail within the first 200 miles of owning my bob last year and my local mc mechanic went changed it for me and was
telling me all the harley axles he had worked on never had any anti-seize on them. he put some on it when he replaced it and also advised putting some on the spark plugs also.

I was readingthe steps inthe service manual on assembly/installation and step 3 states, "Coat axle with LOCTITE ANTI-SEIZE LUBRICANT and install." Now I realize what is going on. They are seeing the word "Loctite" and skipping the rest of the sentence, putting Threadlocker on there.
