2008 fxd shifter rod

What prevents primary oil from leaking out of shifter rod , where the rod runs through the inner and outer primary cases . I took my primary apart to remove and replace my primary chain adjuster and compensator , bike now has 87k miles on it and has been fantastic , i figured i would change out those items due to compensator spring seemed to be getting weak .

When i took it apart there were no seals on either side of primary cases where the rod runs through and i found that odd ?

It's a mls gasket in between the two primary halves. Where the shifter rod runs through it's a hallow void that doesn't actually go into the inside of the primary

i reckon that little round tower gasket isolates the shaft from any oil intrusion once both the outer primary is torqued down . that little gasket is was not in my primary gasket seal set i bought to put it back together . I will pick up a new one before i put her back together .. This particular bike now has 87k miles on her , has done 14 trips from the Florida panhandle up to South Jersey and back , with really no troubles except for a rear wheel bearing issue . I have noticed that starting the bike after its warmed up there is some kick back etc which i suspected to be the Compensator spring getting weak etc . I am also installing a Hayden chain tensioner whilst in there . Thanks !
