Question ECM no response

My 2010 Fat bob odometer diagnostics shows No-Response when trying to access the ECM module. Did it get fried or is it normal? Had to replace stator and now learning about DTC. Seems like I should get a response at least.

Make sure the engine run switch is in the run position.

Does your bike start and run? What is the issue that has you looking for codes?

Yea, the Run switch is on to get to the diagnostics codes menu, and the bike does start and run. I was concerned because I had ridden the bike probably more than 30 miles (after having to push start it) to get home totally killing the battery. The gauges were slamming needles on and off but I got home at least. I got the Diagnostics Manual so I could learn how to check the codes. I was originally about 200 miles away from home when the Engine+Battery lights came on. Seven years on the original battery so I just grabbed a new one hoping all was good. Next day same thing happened. Dealership told me the Voltage Regulator was highly suspect and suggested I replace it before starting home. 30 miles from home bike wouldn't start at gas stop. I was already $300.00 into it and it was dead at home. Stator was fried. Anyway, the Diagnostics Manual shows how to access each module to look for codes including ECM which came back No-Resp. Book says this means you may not have that module (same as the ABS module comes back No-Resp). I finally took a shot at calling the Service dept. at my local dealership. Very reluctantly I was told that this is normal, "because the bike is not running it can't get the ECM data." After asking how to get to the ECM data I was sternly told that what I was seeing is normal and that I should bring the bike in if I wanted any more answers. Test ride was fine as far as not generating new codes but, it seems to be running a bit rough. I'll have to learn my SE race tuner now to try and smooth it out. Thanks to everyone for trying to help.

Your bike does not have to be running to access ECM dtcs, just the ignition turned on and with the kill switch in the run position.
If you have the connection leads for your race/super tuner and the HD software on your computer you can see dtcs via the toolbox screen. It is also possible to view live data information from the same menu.

Thank you both for the correct answer to my problem/mistake.
I thought I'd switched to RUN but, I had not.
Funny that the service tech at my local dealership was so convincing that I actually believed him. That's a fool-me-once for him.
Thanks again. Got all my historical codes cleared, now to tune it up with my SEST software. Hope I can recalibrate my speedometer with it too as I changed my transmission drive pulley from 32T to 30T during the stator fix. Gonna be a new trick for this old dog. "Read 3 times, comprehend once."
