To me, looks are just as important as the feel/soul of a machine.
ABSOLUTELY AGREE!!!!! Can't tell you how many times I used to go out to my garage to take a peek at my lowriders (2001 & 2009) during the long winter months. Love the classic looks and design. The newer models may handle better, but I truly love the looks of the pre-2018 dynas.
Any new 2017 left in dealer inventory only stops them from getting one more 2018 on the floor. My buddy got a huge deal but he is a tough negotiator. If you want new, drive a hard bargain and be prepared to walk if they don't agree. If there is more than one dealer in the area, play them off each other and see who gives the best deal. If they can do it, they will. Myself, I buy used and let the original owner take the big hit on depreciation. My 2011 FXDC cost me $7500 (private sale), earlier this year.
Since being the "original owner" of a bike seems to hold value to you, I would opt for the 2017 new bike.
Unless you can interview the previous owner of the FXDLI, I would likely pass. If you get good info and he has the same "mechanical sympathy" as you, then you might look harder at his old bike. You can find out exact history and internal mods if he made any and when. This is useful in your decision. Test ride both candidates, if you want. Good luck with your decision and ride safe!
No worries .... been swamped with work, so I hadn't revisited my post for a bit.
I decided on the FXDLS over the FXDL .... but now before I make any final decisions I need to take a 2018 Softail for a much longer test ride.
Don't know where you're at, but when the Dyna line was put out to pasture this year, FXDLS's were getting snatched up left and right, and dealers were getting more than book for them. I called every dealer within 4 hours of me and all but one (just came off the last 2017 truck) were gone, when there were plenty to be had 2 weeks earlier.
