What do you want to know, how to drain your oil? Do you have a Factory Service Manual?

G'day Mate,

Wow that was quick I was still typing the question haha, thanks for your help.
Apologies if this question already exists & has been answered elsewhere, I have looked & not found this subject suited to this specific model 1998 FXDWG Evo & being a newbie to this site as of a few minutes ago.
I am interested to hear from anyone with experience who have performed purging engine oil of this model & if there is specific areas of awareness to be on the look out for.
Yes I have an OEM HD manual for this model but I've not found anything regarding this question, not a done thing by the looks.
I'm aware of the usual procedure in draining & refilling & am aware to follow normal procedure when purging without filter in place & draining approx 1L /34oz or until oil comes clean & shut down, so do I need to be aware of anything else other than what I've mentioned.
Thanks in advance.

Get it hot, up to operating temp, and drain. Refill with cheap **** and ride a couple hundred miles/kilometers, then repeat with a good synthetic at the severe interval (or sooner) for a few months. I'm not a big proponent of oil additives, but some Seafoam or Marvel Mystery Oil can help loosen stubborn deposits. Just be extra sure to change the filter before it plugs up. Magnetic drain plugs are super beneficial, too.

G'day CG,

Thanks for your input, I live in a rather harsh tropical heat here in Oz during the summer time 30 - 40 C (86 - 104 F) & I have found synthetic just doesn't cut it here in this particular engine so I actually now use Penrite HPR 20 W 60 diesel oil which works very well & I service engine oil every 4,000K / 2,500 Miles & trans & primary oils every 8,000K / 5,000 Miles.
My question was basically aimed at purging oil during a general service without the filter attached & running until such time a litre/34oz has passed or oil becomes clean whichever comes 1st.
My understanding is my bike is only one of a few to be able to do this but most YouTube videos only seem to show Softail models where the tank is under the seat so I was attempting find a someone experienced using this method on my specific model.
I imagine it would be the normal procedure, check screen filter, run bike up to engine operating temp & then draining & removing filter & refilling to correct oil level & placing a tray under where filter attaches minus filter & run bike until oil comes clean, shut down & refill oil to correct level again & replace with new filter, job done.
I will always claim with confidence I don't know it all & there will always be someone who has had an experience with something going wrong or an oversight I may have missed & my enquiry is for this reason, there is the "Rogue Chopper's Scavenger" total oil change system available but it's cost to get one here is around $200 AU, makes life very clean & easy but rags & a wash is a lot cheaper.
Totally agree with the magnetic plug & have one of those.
Cheers mate

With an evo, fill with clean oil and start it with the filter off. Run till the oil is clean and than install new filter.

Aren't you still pumping dirty scavenged oil right into the clean oil tank?

"Purging" isn't really necessary, unless you suspect debris. Just change oil and filter at your interval and ride it. Also, Philips has 25W-60...

Evo's have the filter on the return side , after the oil has been scavenged from the crankcase it is pumped to the filter and back to the tank . By removing the filter you can collect the oil in a drain pan until a flow of clean fresh oil is observed.

Twin cam engines have the filter on the feed side so this procedure is of no use and can cause damage.
