My 2005 SG seems to burn a quart about every 2K miles.
No spots under the bike where it's parked in the garage - so I'm assuming it's burning.
This does not seem right to me - only 5K miles total.
Anyone else see the level go down this much under normal conditions?
I would suspect you have an issue with your value seats. I do remember hearing about this issue with the 05's or maybe 06's. While HD will tell you some oil consumption in normal I think your quantity in 2K is too much. Speak to your dealer - HD was replacing the value seats under warranty for the model year with the problem. I'll try and find out the exact year for you.
i got the 05 super and i use some oil as well, not sure if its that much but i will definatly put a qt or two in between oil changes (5k). however i do run a hard 70-80 mph on the freeway to work and do about 52mi each way. and if what i;ve heard is correct the high speed stuffs what causes some of the blow by and oil out the breathers, i have a lil puke bottle that it vents to and its always got sum oil in there. but i woul dbe intrested in hearing about the valve replace, i never got anything from harley about this, but i suppose they pulled a dont ask to tell, where if you didnt bring it to there attention they wont bring it to yours......till theres a problem!!! [:'(]let me know what you find out EVO80.
glide05, i have an 05 fxdli and it was also "using" oil, took it to my dealer and they replaced the valve guide seals under warranty. seems the 05's and some 06's were affected by bad installation techniques. the heads have to come off, if you don't have chrome rocker boxes now use this opportunity to do the swap out. the dealer may require a "penalty" run to monitor the oil consumption. this was not a recall but maybe a tech service bulletin. hope yours is still under warranty. good luck.
It is valve guide seals. My 2005 Low Rider uses oil. The main problem I have is the front plug gets oil fouled after about 800 miles. I have to clean it (or replace it) every 1000 or the bike runs crappy. I also have to add a half quart every 700 or so.
I called the dealer to see about fixing it and he denied that there was a problem (surprise), and he said that they would not fix it under any kind of warranty or recall (surprise). He told me to bring cash and they could look at it in 3 weeks.
It never ceases to amaze me that a big company like this has such a loyal following even when they treat many people like crap and do not stand behind their product.
I cannot even imagine having a 2005 Accord, for example, that fouled the spark plugs after 7000 miles of use. It's incomprehensible.
HD reported several 2005 models had a problem with valve seals. My bud has a 2005 Low Rider and experienced the same problem, low oil after 1000 miles AND oil fouled spark plugs. Pull your plugs and take a peek, heavy black build up and you've identified the problem as a valve seal leak. No drips on the floor but it burns off the oil as it oozes into the combustion chamber by the defective valve seals. Push your stealer hard to get it done.
Newer HD's should not use or burn oil at any speed, maybe a little blow by, but not 1 quart or so every 1000 or so miles.
,
Good luck
AWWW MAN!!! this is exactly what i've been dealin with. trout what you describe is exactly what i have the front plug will get build up and foul i too have to clean or replace every so often. when ever it starts hard or starts to run a lil ruff i pull the plugs and sure as sh*t the front and never the back plug is all crappy. i'll see if my shady dealer will pick this up but i seriously doubt it. guess i'll deal with it till its time to do the head porting somday!! thanks for the info fellas, im done scratchin my head about this plug thing now.
Some 05s have bad valve seals you need to get a set of 18094-02a seals and they should be orange in color. The early batch of these seals had a green retaning ring. They will work also. just look for a green retaining ring or orange seals this will fix your problem
thanks for the replies everyone - not sure how I'd get stuff done without the knowledge of this forum
I'm going to monitor it a bit more myself - so far no fouling for me - I'm pulling the front plug as soon as I finish typing.
Guess I need to find a good dealer - the one I bought the bike from sucks - always the same old story when I bring something up:
"burning some oil is normal"
"valve train noise is normal"
"sometimes things fall of - normal"
