Default Brand New Owner Question

Hey gang,

Firstly, thanks for all the "welcomes".... feels good...

Secondly, like I put in my first post, just drove My Bob home from the dealer... Dealer said something about break-in period and not to exceed 80km/h (Sorry from Toronto - metric!) for the first so many Kilometres.... he did mention the service at 1500km and said that after that I could feel free to run her hard.... any opinions / thoughts? I guess I can wait for awhile to hit the highway, but 1500km seems like alot of street driving....

Cheers

Congratulations on the new bike!! You're going to have a blast.

Some of my family lives in Toronto - I grew upinOttawa (live in CT now).

Anyway, check your manual. I believe it limits speed for the first 500 miles (around 800 km), and then you can increase somewhat. Because new machines have lower gear ratios, you can still do quite a good speed without breaking 3,000 RPM (which I think what they want you to stay under).

I dont' know if you are planning on doing any of your own work, but I did a few oil changes before the required 1,000 mile, in order to make sure everything was cleaned out.

Anyway, welcome and look forward to hearing your experiences.

following the manual will not cause any harm, no doubt... but it is a bit conservative. The rings will seat in the first 50 miles. If you happen to go over 3000rpm's , to say, 3200, your bike is not going to pop a cork on you.

The biggest thing you want to avoid is to go long distances at a constant speed. Get out into the twisties and enjoy yourself... just don't race it like a fool

I followed what the manual stated for break in, not the dealer and everything is fine.

By the way, I have not had the opportunity to welcome you, so:

I had about 80 miles on my bike when I first pushed it to 80 MPH (130kmH).The dealer gave me a 500 mile "break in"...about half of what your guy gave you. To me, the break in involves varying RPMs, so pushing it for a bit shouldn't hurt anything. I wouldn't go flat out at 150kmH or more on a dragstrip or anything, but I wouldn't be worried about doing some highway riding at 100kmH.

Welcome Cherry! I just got mine back from the 1000mi check-up. I also followed the manual and change oil/filter at 500 miles. The break-in for the first 50 miles was tough, but after that I varied the speed and kept letting it cool down. The rings need some load on them which you can do by varying the speed and shifting. Twisties and hills work good to give the engine some load. After 500 miles I gradually increased the riding time and the speed. Bike runs great and seems to like the total fluid change that just happened. Hey, just ride and enjoy. Stay safe.

My dealer told me to ride it normally, just not stupid, and to vary speeds often, shifting up and down. I did that for 1500 kms, then changed all fluids. Worst thing is to just let it idle stuck in traffic, I think. I didn't get into stop and go until about 750 kms. I waited until I had about 100 kms before shifting into 6th, at 120 kms. Then, mostly 40 - 100 kms/hr, but once in awhile to 120, even 130.

Now at 3300 kms, ride regularly to 140 and it feels better, and better every day.

Also, getting about 6.5 L/100 kms fuel economy...
