Last year, in June I installed a set of 412's on my wife's Low Rider. In August one of them started to leak oil. Warranteed the shocks and installed new pair. Now in June of 07 after a nice ride today, I find that both shocks are leaking oil all over the place. I am going to try to call Progressive on Monday to see what they plan on doing with this set. Have any of you had problems with the 412's.
I am thinking of replacing with a set of 440's to get some better quality however I don't really want to spend that kind of money. I need to do something as we are going on a trip this next weekend.
I have gone thru two sets of progressive 412 11", and got sick of cleaning the bloody oil off my Street Bob, Not only has this happened to me but also my mate, he's gone thru two set of the exact same spring on his wide glide. Yes they were replaced under warrantee, but what a head ache. I opted to change and pay the difference and purchase the 418 11.5" springs, but in saying that, I am short in the legs, and have trouble reaching the ground. I have found someone now that will be able to modify the 418 11.5" to about 10.5"-10.75" long to suit my disability.
are you guys riding them on the softest setting and bottoming them out?
Well, they are on the softest setting but, they are on my wifes LR and she only weighs 120 pounds. I know how she rides and it certainly isn't from abuse. Just getting a little tired of changing shocks every couple of months.
Maybe I should just get off the cash for the 440's. Anyone had any problems with those?
I changed my stock shocks out for the 412's (12") on my 05' FXDLI. I sold my stock shocks to a Forum member and hope I haven't screwed up! The shocks were installed about 5 months ago but have only 2500 miles on them since the install (work has slowed my riding this season). However, I plan to take a long scoot soon and certainly don't want the shocks to fail on the trip. Is this a common problem with the 412's? Will Progessive allow you to upgrade to a different model if they do? My only contact with the manufacturer was in reference to some decals and they were very helpful.
Got about eighteen thousand miles on mine and no problems, purchased about this time last year. Mine are heavy duty though, cause I weigh about two fourty.
Well I spoke to "Jason" or Josh whichever at Progressive today. He stated that he thought they would replace the shocks for me. He indicated that they didn't recommend putting an 11 inch shock on the Dyna. He said it was too heavy of a bike for the 412 and felt that between the weight of the bike and the passenger it was probably bottoming out a lot and was then hitting against the head seal. He thought I would be better served with a taller shock that wasn't going to bottom out. He also said that I might have better luck with the 440's.
After everything. He told me that after receiving the faulty shocks from me, they would have a seven to ten day turn around time for the return of either repaired or replacement shocks. Well it is the middle of summer and the wife and I are leaving on this Saturday for a week long trip. I guess that I am buying the new 440's and will be selling whatever I get back from Progressive. I cannot wait until after the trip to change the shocks.
