Default Finally back to Dyna (2001 FXD)

Well, after a few years I am finally coming back to a Dyna. Since my Wide Glide I have had a few different Harleys, to include a couple of Softails, Road Glide, even a sportster thrown in there to play on. BUT, outside of the Road Glide, The Dyna is still my favorite Harley platform by far.

SO, sold my FXST, and tomorrow I will be picking up a 2001 FXD. From what I have seen the bike is absolutely immaculate! Basically all stock outside of SE slip ons and some basic chrome enhancements. 30K miles. Elderly owner passed last year and they are selling it cheap to clean out the garage. For around $3k I am not going to complain.

Figure the first thing will be is to check out the CCT. If not replaced will throw a hydraulic set on.

Then, being as my mod moneys is a lot less than it was pre-kiddos, I have some basic things I plan on doing to the bike to make it comfortable, but also functional for me to take to work every day.
* So, plan right now is a QD windshield of some sort. I thought of throwing my old Arlen Ness Café fairing on there, but figure I will go with a full windshield for interstate work rides.
* FOR NOW, I will leave the SE slip ons in place. Will probably window shop exhaust over the next season then pull the trigger on a set next year. More than likely 2-1.
* Been researching saddlebags, and have narrowed it down to the Saddlemen and Viking bags. Right now the Viking Armor bags are on sale. If they match the reviews, they will be worth the cost. (and bags will be required for my to and from work daily)
* I am waiting to actually ride the bike before I make any decisions on handlebars. I am an ape guy. But on my last Dyna I had the tall riser with drag bars set up. Not planning that route with this one due to the speedo/tach location. More than likely will go with 12" Narrow Apes. Probably Burly. Finding the right cables is my search of the day for today.
* Next is one of my conundrums. Farther forward mid controls, or forward controls. If it was just me, I would go with forward controls without thought, (I'm 6'2") but the wife will probably ride it occasionally and mids are best for her. So thinking of doing farther forward mid controls, with a Lindby type engine guard and highway pegs....
* Seat will probably we swapped for a mustang, probably fastback or the like

There is the bike and that is the plan so far. We all know plans change.. But looking forward to bringing her home that's for sure!

FXD's are a great platform.
Bought and rode mine for 21 years. Replaced it with another FXDL in 2015. Still riding this one.

agreed.
If you plan on doing a bunch of performance work and don't mind reading plugs, the carb will save you money.
