I've been running the 412 HD for over 65k miles. But then I like a firm ride. Did blow a seal on one of those a couple years ago, can't repair a 412. I may go better someday, but... not yet.
As for brakes, depends on how you are going to ride it. I know it's not a sport bike, so I don't ride it like that (most of the time ). A good stainless braided brake line, and some EBC pads give quite a boost from stock as far as braking power.
The Street Bob comes with 12" shocks. I bought a set of 13" take-off's on eBay for about $50 that are better than stock. Still stock shocks, just not the lowered version the SB comes with. If budget is an issue might be worth thinking about throwing a set of used full length shocks on for now, then putting good ones on later.

Good Advice. If I can get some fairly cheap stocks w/ more travel, that will help handling allot.
