I was riding home last night and my bike started to seem like it was shifting pretty rough. So I went out to check it over this morning did not see anything out of the ordinary. Fluids were fine. Except I could not check the tranny fluid due to the rookie tech at my local Harley shop breaking off the read level on the dipstick. So I did a clutch adjustment. Tightened everything up.
So I went for another ride this morning after the clutch adjustment. And the bike seems really sluggish when idling. But was fine when you got up to speed when cruising. Another thing I did notice was that the gear indicator was giving off false readings. When I would gear down to come to a stop light and be in first gear with the clutch lever pulled in it it would show I was in 3rd then 4th then it would jump down to first. And if I can remember correctly whenever I would be at a stop light the gear would never show when I had the clutch pulled in. But today even when it said it was in 1st and I had the clutch pulled in I could still free rev the bike and it would not lurch. So I going to drain the tranny and check the fluid for any foreign objects. Is it possible that I incorrectly adjusted the clutch? or do I have another issue(s)? Thanks in advance.
I don't know if it is a coincidence, but I had my bike appraised yesterday at the harley dealer and test rode three bikes while they appraised mines and now I am having some issues.
if its its running sluggish it could be a fuel or electrical issue
Start with the easy stuff, Check your battery cables, make sure they are clean and tight. Make sure your charging system is operating properly...should be about 14.7 volts when at 2000rpm...
Then check your shifter linkage, including the shift arm in behind the primary, these are known to loosen up...
then readjust your clutch again, adjusting both areas including the adjustment inside the primary
Just where did the tech break the dipstick off at?... looks like he broke it off in the tranny! .. could def be the source of your issues.
harley told me just the tip broke off. But I just discovered that the whole freaking stick is gone so basically I just have a transmission cap not a dipstick. But the oil still looks very good not discolored or anything except for those few pieces of metal I found.
