i have 14" apes, i have mine under. You get use to it, if i want to see behind me fully on the clutch side i just take that hand off my bar and look in the mirror. You get use to it because if i dont i cant fully see. if its the throttle side that i need to fully see out of i just pull that arm down and in close to me while holding onto the throttle. Probably not the most safe thing but either is a suicide clutch and people ride with those all the time.
I had them under on my Sportster with the tiny oval mirrors. First ride, I told my buddy "I can't see sh*t with these!". Fast forward a few rides, I never thought about it again as I got used to it and got the angles correct. My new street bob has them up top, first time I rode it I looked for the mirror to change lanes and couldn't find it because it was so high up there! Once I swap out the turn signals, I will be putting them underneath strictly for looks to clean up the front end...I'll get used to them wherever they are. Picture of my SB was right after switching bars, so the mirrors and signals are not adjusted, hence the throttle side looking all cockeyed.

under and no visual issues. it's really dependent on the angle of what you set the bars and your height. it's hit and miss depending on your setup and type and mirrors also.
