Do modern roller cams ever go flat? Can't say I've ever heard of it happening. I've seen some lobes damages from seized rollers on 6.0 Chevy engines, but they still ran fine.

"Sumping"? .. Sheltered life? :>) Do some of the basics first ... Check the plugs. Compression Test

Umm, compression test? If the valves are hardly opening, that'd expose it

Leakdown test. If you don't have a fancy leakdown test tool you can do the redneck test. Take a compression tester and take the valve out of the hose. Set the gauge aside, as you will not need it. Put the piston at TDC. Thread the hose into the spark plug hole, and hook up the compression tester hose to your air compressor and shoot some air into it. If air comes out the intake, intake valve. If it comes out of the exhaust, exhaust valve. If it comes out of the crankcase vent, rings or hole in piston. If a spring broke, it might have let the valve sag which might have hit a piston and bent it.

If it runs fine up until 3k, might be a lifter not building up hydraulic pressure.

Cam lobes are case hardened. Once the hard layer is compromised, the steel underneath is butter. The "case" may only be .025" thick. It's usually caused by a lubricant problem. (Either quality or OCI issue.)
This is, presuming there's no debris to cause a failure.
