Cool Which cam would you recommend?

I have a 2003 Dyna Wide Glide with a stock, carbureted 88ci motor. I have SE slip on exhaust and an S&S Super air cleaner. I am looking to do the Hydraulic Cam Chain conversion, and I figure while I'm there, I will put some new cams in as well. I am looking for low to mid range torque, but I still would like to be able to pass a semi at 80mph while in 5th gear without a problem, like I can now. I've been doing a lot or research, but almost everything I find, is on touring bikes, not Dynas. I don't want to do the 95 BB kit as of yet. From what I am seeing, most people like the Andrews 21 and 26 cams or the S&S 509. Few people like the SE 203 cam. I know this is a topic that everyone asks about, but I am just looking for some advice on where I should go with what I am trying to go after. Thanks in advance for all your help!

I like the Andrews TW26G cam. I run one on my 2005 RoadKing. It is a very strong running cam, with a wide flat tourque band and will pull hard in any gear. You could'n go wrong with it if you are looking for a lot of very usable tourque in the 1800 to 5000 RPM range. Since your bike is a Dyna you can get away with going to a little more came than the ones you have listed because of the weight and gear ratio difference between the Baggers and the Dyna's. I had an 01 Dyna Low Rider that I put in Andrews TW31G cams. It was a great cam for that size bike and was very strong in the otherwise stock 88 motor. You did not mention how many miles you have on your bike, but what ever it is you you are on the right track with wanting to get ride of the Factory Spring Style Tensioners that came with the bike. Personally I would run gear drive cams if I had the choice, that way you completely eliminate having to ever change the tensioner shoe again. Also while you are in there I would upgrade the Oil pump to a Fueling, S&S, Jim's. If you are having the work done by a compentent mechanic they will also check the run out on the pinion shaft. You want to do this 1st before you order any parts to make sure that it is within tolerance with any changes you make.

BB. No8,

I have 35K miles on my bike. I had the tensioners checked about 1,000 miles ago and they were fine. I just want the peace of mind of knowing I will not have to mess with them again. I have thought about going to gear driven, but I do not like that idea so much. It is just a personal preference I guess. I am upgrading the oil pump and swapping the cam plate with a billet cam plate and the Screamin Eagle oil pump. One thing that I am not sure of though that you may be able to answer for me is, would I need to have my carbs re-jetted if I swap the cam to a bolt on cam?

Depends, if you already have a stage 1 intake and free flowing exhaust and the carb has been re-jetted you might be OK. If you are still running the stock jet from the factory you will probably need to re-jet the carb.

I'd go with Andrews 21n conversion cams & use the late model plate & pump, that way you have roller chains both front & rear, I think you can still get the parts list from Andrews. Don't forget to change your inner cam bearings to full complement instead of INAs.

Check out the Red Shift 511. Bolt in, super quiet valvetrain. Earlier intake valve close than stock (34*) so it builds a few psi more cylinder pressure. Great throttle response & good power down low & pulls hard to redline. Put these in my '02 & couldn't be happier. With Cycle Shack slip ons, high flow a/c & re-jet, it gets down the road more than quickly enough to get me into trouble.

If you're going to stay at 88", the S&S 509 is supposed to give the biggest seat of the pants bang for the buck, but isn't a good choice if planning on going to 95"/97"/98".
