My 99 dyna just past 91,000 milesand just keeps on truckin. I've ridden softails and road couches But I agree that the dyna is the way to go. It's as good running around town as it is on week long rides. Love quick flick corners in the mountains. try that on a softail.
Dyna's to me are the Hot Rod of the Harley family. Big V-twin in the lightest chassis the big twin comes in.
That, to me, sums it up. The Dynas are full-sized bikes, I'd look like a dork on a Sportster. They're big enough to be comfortable but with none of that extra crap. It's pure motorcycle with a good ride, great handling and that intangible something that makes Harley what it is.
Sportsters and V-Rods are great bikes in their own respective ways. The Sportster is just too small and uncomfortable for larger riders and the V-Rod, while it sounds and looks great, just doesn't sound like the big air-cooled motors.
I feel that the Dyna bikes represent individuality, muscle and fun. Even though a lot of folks may have a different model of the dyna, I think we all are good at differentiation. The Dyna represents those who walk the walk not just talk the talk. A buddy of mine has a nice Fat Boy w/ a custom paint job and a really good setup overall and when the bikes are side by side, mine gets just as many looks if not more. I think everyone has seen a softail all fancy w/ the paint and various other goodies, but when they see a Dyna, they stop and look. For the most part, I see Softails as show and Dynas as go. Yes there are those that are different, but for the most part, I think it holds true.
I have owned a 1992 Sportster , 1995 Dyna Lowrider , 1996 Fatboy , 1999 Fatboy , 1999 Dyna Lowrider , all in that order ,and now a 2006 Street Bob ( really a super glide ) The Sportster is to small , but i love the looks , the Fatboys arealso greatlooking , big and bulky with the floorboards , butthey wear me out riding all day because lack of the rubber mount , they arenot for riding all day , something tells me i love the Dyna model because i always seem to come right back to it , to me it looks like a big Sportster and handles great which is why i like it , besides that Harley rubber mount and shake , you know your on a Harley at the light , but smooth as glass on the highway , and with fuel injection and 6 speed who could ask for more !!
For me the wide glide is the ultimate Harley. Looks great with the extra rake and still handles great. I think the xtra wheelbase makes for a smoother ride ( glide). Have a sporty that the wife rides and its a great bike for short blasts around town. Just too small for me. Can't think of any cons of owning a dyna. Just my .02. Take some test rides on a couple of dynas and you'll see what were sayin. Good luck and ride safe!

I just bought my first Harley, a 2007 FXDC in cobalt blue. I am a dirt rider primarily - have been for years - 40 to be exact, I own a 2004 XR250R and a 2005 XR650L Honda, great bikes and tons of fun.
But I had this haunting feeling to see what a HD was all about, I rode a 2004 sportster 883 that a friend had and was smitten. But I wanted a BIG twin, but not the HOGS, with all the gear on em. Again and again I visted the HD website to look at the Dyna's, the Super Glide Custom to be exact. Last Thursday I bought one. I have been grinnin ear to ear ever since - man what a bike! I was a bit nervous at first! BIG bike! but it handles well and power is smooth and awesome. It turns heads everywhere I go :-) I can't get enough of it!!!!!
Price wise, there's no denying it's at the "bottom" of the big twin spectrum, but if a Camaro costs less than a diesel dually where does that put the Camaro in the GM lineup??? (You see where I going with this...)
I rode a bunch of other bikes including BMW's, Road King, Gold Wing, V-Max, etc before buying my used FXDXT and none of them give me the versatility and consequently more enjoyment in more situations than my Dyna.
Here's a pic of it before yesterdays 200 mile round trip for a few bottles of wine not available locally
