Default Rear Brake Light 'holder' questions

Hey guys and girls

I am really struggling with a few things about my rear tail light.

Long story short, due to requiring lots of attention, I can no longer mount my rear tail light assembly on the bike. Importantly, the rear tail light itself is not the topic I am talking about

The two mounting screws go through the traditional brake light assembly and into these 'grommet looking thingies' who in turn are glued into the 'receiving assembly' (which also holds the AMP connector sockets), which in turn is mounted to the bike with one honkin' screw (hidden normally).

One of the 'grommet looking thingies' the glue came loose (came off) and now won't hold the screw in place.

I sure hope my description makes sense. I am unable to grab a pic now but hopefully later

My question, finally, is what are the proper terms for these items?

I attempted a repair on the 'grommet thingy' 3x and I think I've finally ruined it with a honkin glob of dried epoxy. Soaking it in carb cleaner now to try a fourth time, hopefully (but doubtful) the epoxy will come off.

I'm also needing advice on doing the repair (is epoxy/jbweld viable?), but I think getting the terms straight first is more important

I had a similar problem with my brake license holder. I just took apart, made bracket for shock mount, and wired up an LED bar to run Brake and turn signals.

I considered doing that, I like the side mount plates a lot. But I invested in a LED laydown taillight actually that I like a lot too and it works well. So, future!

Sounds like a "well nut". Year and model?

2007 FXDB. Looking up pictures of "well nut" does indeed bear an extremely strong resemblance. Mine also have a bit of outside threading ostensibly to provide additional grab. Finally, some pictures:

Overall 'receptacle' unit, with some aftermarket rubber around the edges

Lazy, fallin' down on the job thingy

Working thingy

What remains after I attempted to epoxy it together

You mean the cheap plastic base the l lens screws to? I have used two part epoxy to repair a couple of those , gluing the brass thread insert with limited success. Use blue lock tight on the screws and be very careful not to over tighten. Push the lens in until the gasket compresses then run the screw up to the lens edge and maybe 1/4 turn more.

Not well nuts. Those look molded in place. Hard to repair.

Is the housing metal or plastic?

If metal, regular JB Weld should do a pretty good job.
If plastic, you should use a structural adhesive designed for metal/plastic assemblies. JB Weld makes one that has worked well for me, but it's NOT the same as regular JB.

Either way, you have to be careful with cleaning both surfaces and eliminating air pockets when the insert is re-inserted. The old adhesive should be scraped off and both parts need adequate "tooth" for the adhesive to grab onto. Also clamp it and leave it undisturbed for at least 24 hours.

A thread insert may also be a possibility. Keensert, time-sert, helicoil, etc

Very helpful feedback all

Yeah, 85% sure we're talking about the same thing. I tried blue loctite at first but that instantly failed me. Epoxy lasted almost 10 seconds before it popped off, resulting in that 4th pic you see

Feeling pretty darned plastic to me. The inserts do look brass, though mine is now encased in epoxy. Had a feeling there was a cross-material special epoxy. Will look for it
Thread insert is interesting, it seems like the plastic might give out though

I wanted to check them out on eBay, but god help you if you type in "tail light assembly" for a Harley on there. Does anyone know the part number and/or official name of that base/receptacle thing?
