Default primary rattle

So I went for a ride yesterday and noticed an unusual noise. I got it home and determined that it is coming from the primary and happens only when the bike is in neutral with the clutch out. Sounds like a loud rattle that goes away as soon as I pull the clutch. Clutch cable checked out ok. Everything functions ok at this point just trying to figure out what's up with all the clatter. Any ideas? Oh yeah, 2006 street bob.

Have the rear, inner primary bearing checked.

I've been through two already, first one crapped at 6,500.

Sounds like the inner primary. Just had mine changed on a '06 wide glide at 10k. Seems to be happening a lot with '06 and maybe '07's. Wish I knew why.

Thanks guys. I was thinking the bearing as well just not sure as it hadn't happend to me yet. Time will tell. Good news is it's still under warranty so I'm covered regardless (I hope). Not to thrilled knowing I have a time bomb waiting to go off in the primary though. Who's to say the new bearing they install won't be crap as well. Makes me want to do a belt drive conversion.

try tightening your comp sprocket . If you hear it loudest in N , then i would try there before replacing the bearing in your primary inner.

I have had 3 inner primary bearings replaced on 06 Street Bob, about every 7500 miles, starts getting real noisy and can start to feel extra vibration through foot pegs, especially when cold. Last time had replaced, complained that they should put new case in, said motor company wouldn't ok, that if went out again, would then replace case & gear set, have 29000 on it and it is starting to get noisy again, so probably will finallyget new parts under warranty. I have run Syn 3 and changed to Amsoil last go around, seems to be lasting a little longer since changing brand of oil. Glad I have 7 yr extended warranty, as I put appox 17000 per year on bike in AZ, so have a lot of heat to deal with.
